Nightly Ramble:A Mid-summer Night’s Steam

It’s warm around here again, and it’s been humid, and raining.  So I find myself in my office catching up on my reading.  Here’s some thoughts about what I found…

  • Just about everybody on the planet has made comment about this supposedly new Usama BinLaden Tape. James Joyner [1] notes the possibility that this is old tape, rehashed for the purpose of making us believe he’s still alive.  Well, you know how it is, when a band been around for while they release a greatest hits album just keep the sales moving.
  • So Dennis “Kooky” Kucinich is claiming that John Edwards is cheating. [2] Trying to rig the election.  (Note, please, my reluctance to use “thinks” in the same para with Kucinich’s name… the two are approximately a separate as Andrea Dworkin [3] from the career of runway modeling.) Well, Look; I certainly wouldn’t put it past John Edwards to cheat.  But why he’d expend that kind of effort on a full goose Bozo like Kucinich, is beyond me. I’m forced to assume that this is a vanity play on the part of Kucinich. I mean, if he thinks Edwards is cheating him out of a chance of winning, he’s worse than even I figured.
  • In going over some of the commentary this morning on Michael “The Great Rotundo” Moore’s latest propaganda effort, in occurs to me that what we are dealing with here, is someone who can’t quite bring himself to understand the value of individual liberty and freedom and a sense of personal responsibility.  A quick look at the man, should give you a clue as to whether not he’s ever been able to deal with personal responsibility.  I swear; when that massive MI finally comes, Burger King is going to see its stock severely depressed. Rich Lowry has an interesting bit up on the matter over at RCP. [4]
  • John Hawkins over at Right Wing News, comes up with what I consider to be an excellent set of points [5] to add to the overall strategy for 2008 for the GOP.  The disagreement I have with John, of course, is that he’s consulting for Duncan Hunter of this point, and I don’t think Hunter is the man to do that.  I do note however, that the positions thus far taken by Fred Thompson, matched all of John’s points rather nicely.
  • I notice Paul Krugman [6] still hasn’t got a clue… he claims: “the opponents of universal health care appear to have run out of honest arguments.”… Well, pardon the hel out of ME…. but, at what point in the past has Krugman ever entertained an honest argument, much less offered one? That’s what’s been so infuriating about dealing with his writings, and for that matter that of the whole of the left in this country, anymore.  It is nearly impossible to argue constructively, given the level of dishonesty coming from the left.  Krugman is but one example of this.
  • John Edwards [7] talking about poverty is like Rosie O’Donnell giving out beauty tips.
  • I noted earlier today and the upcoming demise of the candidacy of John McCain.  I note with some amusement that Jim Gilmore has withdrawn [8] from the race.  I wasn’t even aware he was still running, actually.  But Gilmore’s dropping out does put the slow motion sinking of the McCain candidacy in context; The actual move to resign is anti climatic after the disaster of the campaign waged.
  • The investigation of that multi fatality crash between an SUV driving by 5 cheerleaders, and a tractor trailer rig is now claimed to have been caused by the driver text messaging while driving [9].  Apparently, telephone company records show some text messages being sent moments before the crash.  Thing is, that doesn’t ring true; there were four other people in the truck.  Further, the driver had just completed a rather complex move getting around slower traffic.  I know people are idiots, but come on.  Sorry, I don’t buy that explanation.
  • Good to see Rodney Dill back from vacation, and running OTB’s caption contest [10] again. I was going through wisecrack withdrawal symptoms, there.
  • $77 million.  That’s what the new Harry Potter flick [11] brought in over the weekend.  $77 million.  Hey, look, I can take half of one of those 77 if you’re not using it…
  • Reports are indicating that the parents of Lance Corporal Justin Sharratt, one of the marines exonerated in the matter at Hadditha… plan to make an appearance at the office of Pennsylvania democrat John Murtha. Murtha, as you know, has yet to gather together the integrity needed to apologize for running his mouth in the matter, and calling the marines “murderers” .  Personally, I’d like to be a fly on the wall at that meeting.
