Felix, the Cat (5)

Hmmm.

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras —AP-  [1] Hurricane Felix strengthened into a Category 5 monster storm early Tuesday, forecasters said, just as it prepares to make landfall near the Nicaragua-Honduras border, home to thousands of stranded Miskito Indians.

Of course this story includes the obligatory global warming tie in:

This is only the fourth Atlantic hurricane season since 1886 with more than one Category 5 hurricane, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Only 31 such storms have been recorded in the Atlantic, including eight in the last five seasons.

Of course, even here, they can’t get it right.  How do we, today, determine the strength of the storm?  We fly through it.  That’s really the only accurate way to do it.  So tell me?  How did they manage to make such determinations in 1886?  As a matter of fact, until at least the nineteen forties how did they manage to do this?  The fact of the matter is is they’ve only had that method available to them for the last 50 years.  On its face, this paragraph is pure unsupportable hype.

watching the rest of this hurricane season developer is going to be interesting; almost as interesting as watching the hype-meisters at work for the remainder of it.
