Checking Out Yourself

From Michael Beck:

I saw a meme talking about a line to the back of a Walmart yammering about “This is Walmart trying to force people to use self checkout.”

It’s a complete lie. I’ve been in Walmart’s all over the country at all hours since this has begun and I’ve never seen a line like this at self checkout.

Self checkout is THE most efficient means of checkout for customers. Conversely, it’s a huge shoplifting risk for the store.

I have yet to find anyone who can intelligently explain the horror of self checkout. But having spent several years in big box retail management, I can explain its necessity in the current day realities of retail.

Go ahead, ask. I DARE YOU!

Like, wow, man. Reality… what a concept.

Look, the principles here are precisely the same as the ordering kiosks at McDonald’s and Burger King, etc.

It seems to me that the majority of people complaining about self checkout don’t understand the amount of costs involved with hiring people that can’t count your change, will stack cans of vegetables on top of the bread that you just bought, and so on.

That’s fascinating, because they will generally be the first ones to complain about blue streak when prices go up to cover the cost of bringing people in… And that’s even absent the personal issues brought about by covid-19 and the governmentally imposed reactions to it… Which according to estimates I’m seeing now closed down 40% of small businesses in this country, permanently. Since that’s a lot more of the way of jobs than a few cashiers at Walmart, you would think that they would be saying something about that. But, no.

It’s telling, what some people will complain about and what they won’t complain about, isn’t it?

Remember, businesses are not there to provide jobs, they are there to make money for the investors. What jobs get created are a happy by-product, nothing more.
