Just something to think about along these lines…
There is nothing on the planet, no physical reality that doesn’t owe its existence to something else. Somebody always created it.
Personally, I see no conflict whatsoever between the Big Bang Theory and creation. God creating a universe would make kind of a big bang, after all.
But if we accept for some reason the idea that, like everything else around us, the universe itself, owes its existence to something or someone else, what? To what or to whom does it owe it’s existence and what kind of nature would they have?
At the very least, two points emerge here.
The implication of The Big Bang Theory as embraced by most atheists is that the universe did not always exist. That is somehow a point that they never get around to mentioning directly… And that’s particularly odd given that everything else in our experience was created by somebody.
The reason they don’t do that is because it would fly in the face of their stated belief that there are no deities.
And that belief of course flies in the face of the scientific method which they claim to believe in and trust.
Consider the words of Marcelo Gleiser [1]:
I honestly think atheism is inconsistent with the scientific method. What I mean by that is, what is atheism? It’s a statement, a categorical statement that expresses belief in nonbelief. “I don’t believe even though I have no evidence for or against, simply I don’t believe.” Period. It’s a declaration. But in science we don’t really do declarations. We say, “Okay, you can have a hypothesis, you have to have some evidence against or for that.” And so an agnostic would say, look, I have no evidence for God or any kind of god (What god, first of all? The Maori gods, or the Jewish or Christian or Muslim God? Which god is that?) But on the other hand, an agnostic would acknowledge no right to make a final statement about something he or she doesn’t know about. “The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence,” and all that.
Whatever / whoever created the universe is beyond physicality as we understand it. Where, after all, assuming a physical being would such an intelligence be? And if such a being created the universe what kind of physical presence would it take on? Would it even have some physical reality as we know it?
As a bonus,….
The more we learn about the physical universe, and about ourselves, the more we begin to understand that there was an intelligence here that is superior to our own… rather obviously superior to our own… because we still don’t understand all of it.
