The house has joined the Senate in condemning MoveOn’s “Betray us” ad. The AP wire is saying:
The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to condemn the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org for a recent advertisement attacking the top U.S. general in Iraq.
By a 341-79 vote, the House passed a resolution praising the patriotism Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, and condemning a MoveOn.org ad that referred to Petraeus as “General Betray Us.”
Alex Knapp notes the same story and says:
Still, I find it bizarre that both houses of Congress felt the need to actually vote to condemn a political ad in a newspaper. Don’t Congresspersons have better things to do with their time?
They’re about saving their backsides with this vote, Alex. They have seen the kind of firestorm that occurred against Hillary Clinton, and others who refused to condemn the ad. Frankly, I think their statement goes a little bit beyond the end or its content. The ad is reflective of an attitude, which they are also inherently condemning. It’s about time.
In the meanwhile, it should be noted that this condemnation is yet further evidence of a split occurring within the democrat party.

I find it amazing that any, let alone 79, members of the House would vote against this resolution. I think it better to abstain than vote “no” on something like this… obviously no serious political ramifications, but it should cause those of us who care about the character of our elected representatives to take note of this and wonder what motivates these people to act so brazenly. Do they fear reprisal? Do they have a message they are trying to send? Or are they so partisan as to truly consider siding with MoveON AND (theoretically) Ahmadinejad just to take a pathetic stand against Bush?

Art;
of course, reprisal is the issue. That, my friend, is a measure of just how far we have gone toward the moveon wing actually winning the democratic party.
