LONDON (AP) _ John Inman, the actor best known for his role in the British television series “Are You Being Served?,” died Thursday, his manager said.
Inman, 71, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in London after a long illness, said manager Phil Dale.
The way things are today, the part Inman played wouldn’t make it by the censors… they’d call it discriminatory.

The part he played barely made it by the gay community back in the 70’s. They were upset by what they saw as his portrayal of an over-the-top homosexual. The actress who played Miss Brahms says, “we never said Mr. Humprhies was gay”. Since he actually WAS a gay man, I think they had nerve complaining about how he acted the part.

Perhaps.
But it’s like I said a couple of months back on a slightly different topic… they’re arguing against someone in obtaining something that happens in real life. Humor, you see, never works unless it is firmly rooted in reality; unless the viewer can see something identifiable in real life. I submit that at the root of the image problem is that the image exists in real life, not that it’s being imitated.
I also submit that the show ran for so many years, and the character was so popular, and the homosexuals complains so loudly, all as evidence that the humor was working very well, indeed.
