When Eliot Spitzer played the Sheriff of Wall Street, his targets lacked the ability to fight back. Well Spitzer has learned that his new target, State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, has the power to fight back and intends to do just that
James T Madore, Newsday, reports Bruno intends to subpoena Spitzer:
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno today raised the possibility of Gov. Eliot Spitzer being compelled to testify before investigators looking into his aides’ misuse of the State Police in a plot against the senator.
Speaking on opening day of thoroughbred racing here, Bruno, the state’s top Republican, blasted Democrat Spitzer for his top aides’ refusal to be interviewed by the Attorney General’s office for its recently concluded probe. The senator suggested that the Senate investigations committee, the Assembly investigations committee and the State Investigations Commission could launch new examinations.
I wonder if Spitzer will claim executive priviledge and how the media will react to it. Unlike the bruhaha in Washington, there is illegal behavior at the base of this problem and not merely policy differences. Of course, Bruno does not, at least yet, have the press behind him.
