Bootz this morning brings up a point that’s been in the back of my mind for some days now, but aparently misses the angle…

“Did you folks know that about one week ago U.S. intelligence operatives uncovered a memo from a leading terrorist bemoaning the level of American success in Iraq?  The memo was from Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, one of the world’s most wanted Islamic terrorists today.  Al-Zarqawi was exhorting Al Qaeda to promote a Sunni – Shiite civil war in Iraq, the only way he sees to turn around the American success in Iraq.

We’re winning!  That’s news, isn’t it?  A leading Islamic terrorist says that the United States is “suffocating” the jihad in the Middle East!  Isn’t that just what we went over there to do?  Don’t you think that’s news?

Apparently it’s not.

Columnist Diana West searched the transcripts of the White House media briefings for last week and found that there was only one question about the memo.  Only one.  The enemy admits it’s losing, and this gets only one question.  But what about President Bush’s service in the National Guard?  Well, that issue brought over 100 questions.”

Bootz’s excellent point aside, the one thing he doesn’t bring up here is that this memo is a tacit admission to something that the left in this country (and therefore the press) doesn’t want to admit.

That being that all the complaints about the diversion of resources away from the war on terrorism were nonsense… that Iraq was in fact *the* place to go to stem the tide of terrorism. And this memo is confirmation that Mr. Bush was doing the right thing all along.

And so the press ignores it.

The Seattle Times: syas:

“WASHINGTON Former Green Party candidate Ralph Nader is poised to declare that he will seek the presidency again this year, this time as an independent and despite a vigorous effort by the left to dissuade him, according to friends and associates. “

I doubt at this point he’ll have as much influence, as he did last cycle.
Mostly because of Clinton. Kerry’s farther to the left than Clinton was/is; less difference between Kerry and Nader.
Still, he’ll swing a couple states away from the Democrats. Matter of fact, the Kerry folks are reportedly quite worried about Nader.

We’ll see.

The New York Post will amaze the left today, reporting that:

“Retired Brig. Gen. William Turnipseed, the 187th’s Tactical Reconnaissance Group’s former commander, recanted his statement that he couldn’t remember if Bush reported for duty, now saying his memory is faulty because he’s in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease. “

Can you imagine the Democrats now?

“Do ya suppose…… nah…. couldn’t be, huh?……..

Better to just go on with this concept that Bush is the Devil incarnate. Won’t do anything for our election chances if our claims are exposed as outright fraud…”

Zogby notes that:

“Massachusetts Senator John Kerry is set to carry Wisconsin with 47% of support among likely primary voters, on the eve of Wisconsin’s Democratic primary.”

However, he goes on to note that there’s a trend that doesn’t bode well for Kerry:

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean steps into second place with 23%, followed by North Carolina Senator John Edwards in third place with 20%. “

So, while Kerry holds a substantial lead, there is a serious number of voters… almost half… voting against him. This may play heavy later on.

DRUDGE is asking the right questions this monring and in the doing has nailed the liberal leaning press once again.

He points out that for all the hollering about extra marital affairs and the press coverage thereof when the subject is John Kerry, they didn’t seem to ahve nearl the trouble asking George W. Bush similar questions on less evidence…

In 1992 top reporters swiftly reacted to a footnote in a book quoting a long dead ambassador.

CNN rushed to get the rumor into the media stream as White House correspondent Mary Tillotson confronted President Bush as he hosted Israel Prime Minister Rabin in the Oval Office.

“There is an extensive series of reports in today’s New York Post alleging that a former U.S. ambassador, a man now deceased, had told several persons that he arranged for a sexual tryst involving you and one of your female staffers in Geneva in 1984.”

Asked NBC’s Stone Phillips to the president’s face at the height of the “rumor mongering”:

“Have you ever had an affair?”

CBS’ Harry Smith then confronted Bush spokesperson Mary Matalin over on-air morning coffee:

“Let me ask you about something else. There’s a book out, or a book that’s just about out that in a footnote names that then-Vice President Bush had an affair with an assistant when he was on a mission in Geneva. Well, that footnote has turned into frontpage news (holding up N.Y.POST), at least in New York, in the N.Y. POST. Albeit a tabloid, it is usually a conservative newspaper. Are you ready to say that accusation is a flat out lie?”

One can understand why the press would be nervous about Matt…

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi on National Review Online

This is a letter that should scare the hell out of about anyone. Yet, it’s encouraging; we’re winning this war on terror. The only chance they have of winning is if Kerry gets elected. No wonder, then, the Teheran Times has endorsed Kerry…

Here’s some John Kerry Pictures I think will stick with you.

John Kerry is going to spend the next 250 some-odd days and something around 200 million dollars of ads and so on, to try to get you to forget these images. I’ve used others in the last few weeks, of course but these have been in my in basket, some sent by readers. (By all means, if you have one to add, send it along!)

When Kerry tries to separate himself from the anti-American movement headed and funded by Hanoi Jane Fonda, remember this one.

When Kerry claims he will speak for American interests as President, remember this one. That’s Ho Chi Minn’s bust, up there.

When you see a Kerry Bumper Sticker, think:

When Hanoi Jane tries, as she did recently, to tell us about how pro-American she was and how the people like Kerry, following her were heroes, remember what she and her followers, including John Kerry really stood for, as shown us by this pic of her with the VietCong.

When John Kerry tries to tell us about how he’s every man, and knows what it’s like to work for a living… when he tries to tell us about how he’s going to fight for the every man, when he tries to tell us about how he’s not the very type he claims to be fighting.. IE; the privileged rich… remember this pic of Kerry on JFK’s yacht. That’s him on the left. He’d be what, around 15?

When Kerry tells us about how he resepcts the military, and America itself, remember how he got arrested in the act of protesting… not against the war, but against America.

Finally, let’s remember that were Kerry in a position to make the choice, the person responsible for so many mass graves in and around Iraq would still be in power. This too, then, is a John Kerry picture.

A picture, they say, is worth 1000 words. Apparently, they were right. I’m banking you’re going to remember the real John Kerry, and not what his handlers are spending all that money trying to project.

George Will: A few questions for John Kerry

George Will is asking questions the press ought to be asking, and never will:

Other than denoting your disapproval, what does the adjective mean in the phrase “special interest”? Is the National Education Association a special interest? The AFL-CIO?

You abhor “special tax giveaways for the privileged and special interests.” When supporting billions in ethanol subsidies, mostly for agribusinesses, did you think about corn-growing, caucus-holding Iowa?

Is the National Rifle Association a “special interest”? Is “special” a synonym for “conservative”?

When you denounce “lobbyists” do you include those for Planned Parenthood and the Sierra Club? Is “liberal lobbyist” an oxymoron?

All the Americans affected by laws you pass — that is, all Americans — refuse to pipe down and mind their own business so that you can mind their business for them. Often they hire lobbyists to exercise their First Amendment right to “petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Can you despise lobbyists without disparaging that right?

You say the rich do not pay enough taxes. In 1979 the top 1 percent of earners paid 19.75 percent of income taxes. Today they pay 36.3 percent. How much is enough?

You say the federal government is not spending enough on education. President Bush has increased education spending 48 percent. How much is enough?

In January 1991, after Iraq extinguished Kuwait’s sovereignty, you opposed responding with force rather than economic sanctions. Have such sanctions ever undone such aggression?

On Jan. 11, 1991, you said that going to war was abandoning “the theory of deterrence.” Was it not a tad late to deter Iraqi aggression?

The next day you said, “I do not believe our nation is prepared for war.” How did unpreparedness subsequently manifest itself?

On Jan. 22, 1991, responding to a constituent opposed to the Gulf War, you wrote “I share your concerns” and would have given sanctions more time. Nine days later, responding to a voter who favored the war, you wrote, “I have strongly and unequivocally supported President Bush’s response to the crisis.” Did you have a third position?

You say the Bush administration questions “the patriotism” of its critics. You say that as president you will “appoint a U.S. trade representative who is an American patriot.” You mean the current representative, Robert Zoellick, is not a patriot?

You strongly praise former Treasury Secretary Bob Rubin, who strongly supports NAFTA and free trade. Have you changed your mind about him or about free trade (as you have changed your mind about No Child Left Behind, the 2002 war resolution, the Patriot Act, etc.)?

You oppose immediate termination of U.S. involvement in Iraq, and you opposed the $87 billion to pay for involvement. Come again?

In 1994, the year after the first attack on the World Trade Center, you voted to cut $1 billion from counterterrorism activities. In 1995 you proposed a $1.5 billion cut in intelligence funding. Are you now glad that both proposals were defeated?

You favor civil unions but not same-sex marriage. What is the difference? What consequences of gay marriage worry you? Your state’s highest court says marriage is “an evolving paradigm.” Do you agree? You say you agree with what Dick Cheney said in 2000: States should have a right to “come to different conclusions” about same-sex marriage. Why, then, were you one of only 14 senators who opposed the Defense of Marriage Act, which protects that right? Massachusetts opponents of the same-sex ruling are moving for a referendum to amend the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. How will you vote?

You favor full disclosure of political spending. Organized labor is fighting new regulations requiring full disclosure to union members of the political uses of their mandatory union dues. As president, would you rescind these regulations?

Praising McCain-Feingold restrictions on political contributions, you said: “This bill reduces the power of the checkbook and I will therefore support it.” In December you saved your sagging campaign by writing it a $6.4 million check. Why is your checkbook’s unfettered freedom wholesome?

You deny that restricting campaign contributions restricts speech. How much of the $6.4 million did you spend on speech — broadcast messages?

Billionaire George Soros says he will spend whatever is necessary — just a few million so far, but more coming — to defeat Bush. As one who believes — well, who says — there is “too much money” in politics, are you appalled?

Outside the Beltway makes note today of the varied degree of coverage of each of the candidates and wonders what’s going on… remembering that Clark told reporters about this affair of Kerry’s “off the record,” James Joyner notes:

: “Given their fascination with George Bush’s 1973 dental records, this would seem to be worth exploring. One would think someone would at least ask Clark about this on the record, since they covered his endorsement of Kerry the same day that the alleged quotation came out.”
