D-day Plus 62

The House of Representatives, prodded by Republicans, voted on Tuesday to possibly consider expelling indicted Democratic Rep. William Jefferson of Louisiana before he even stands trial.On a bipartisan vote of 373-26, the Democratic-led House approved a resolution directing its ethics committee to investigate federal bribery charges against Jefferson and recommend whether the nine-term lawmaker should be removed from Congress.

Only five members of the House have been expelled in the past 150 years.

Not surprising, if a little quick. Still, if the NFL can seek to suspend players for poor behavior sans a criminal conviction, it isn’t beyond the pale that the Congress would investigate (and perhaps expel) one of it members before a conviction, depending on the nature of the evidence.

I respond in the comments, there:

A little quick?  I think not.
Look, Pelosi has been trying to squash this investigation for the last six months. The prevailing view within Congress has been that this investigation should have been started quite some time ago. With the indictment, Pelosi no longer has cover for her squashing attempts, and the prevailing view of the body of Congress, can go forward.

Of course, it should be noted, that the reasoning behind the prevailing view of the body of Congress, is fairly well split between Democrats wanting/needing to cut their losses, and Republicans wanting to apply the consequences of Jefferson’s actions and democrat in action about Jefferson, to the forthcoming election.

And of course in a world which measures speed of action by when the investigation actually starts, Pelosi can say she acted quickly, and decisively.

It should also be noted, that while the vote was 373 to 26, that thirteen members voted “present”, effectively voting against the measure to investigate Jefferson. That’s 39 members, gang, not 26.
Personally, I’d like Jefferson to stay in office as long as possible. If nothing else, he is effective in the role of a millstone around the necks of congressional Democrats.

I will say, that I’m looking for a list of who those people are. If any of our readers have a link to such a list, post it here please.   I’m willing to bet, that every single one of them, is a Democrat.

Meantime, as for Jefferson himself, it interests me that the defense that seems to be evolving over the matter, takes on an amazing resemblance to the defense of  another denizen of Washington DC.  Namely, “The bitch set me up”.

Since we are talking about a Democrat here, I suppose it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the immediate response is that his actions are somebody else’s fault.  The pattern, however, is worth noting, if for no other reason than more firmly establishing the relationship between such excuses and what passes for normalcy among Democrats.

Ok, Mike Huckabee is not my canidate and CNN is not my network.  Further, Creation is not exactly my cup of tea.  Yet canidates asides and your theory on the origin of human life aside, you have love to Huckabee’s answer to a none relevant, and indeed foolish question.  Erick, Red State, has the video.

I say ity time to give the presidential debates back to the adult networks,  and leave CNN to reporting car chases.

The Music: It was 40 years ago, today, that Sgt Pepper taught the band to play. No kidding…. give or take a few days. June first in the UK and June 3rd in the states.

Among the other technical innovations, it was actually the first album ever to use the Dolby Noise reduction system.  Tape noise, when you’re banging from track to track, becomes a serious issue.

* OK, OK, I know… Scooter Libby.

We have, in Sandy Berger someone who committed an actual crime, unlike Libby.  All of the screaming that’s been going on over Scooter Libby, from the left, becomes meaningless in light of their cries of foul, at the treatment Sandy Berger got, for having the documents stuffed in his pants. So what’s with all the carrying on on the left side of the ‘sphere tonight? I suppose that we’re talking about a group of people who have been so bereft of any kind of victory and all over the past several years, that anything is cause for breaking out the wacky weed.  But before we get too far into the celebration, maybe we ought a look at just what we have here.
Libby was convicted on a case were no charge was ever brought against him, or anyone else, as regards the original investigation that Fitzpatrick was supposed to be doing.  The bottom line, here, is this entire thing was set up to cover the tracks of Joe Wilson and Valarie Plame, and Richard Armatage… the one who had leaked her name in the first place.  If anyone, there are the real liars, and the ones guilty of obstruction of justice.  it’s pointless, at the moment, to comment further on all of this, given that it’s going to be another year and a half before this comes out of the appeals process, for all of the reasons I mentioned and a few I didn’t, this one SHOULD be appealed.

* Speaking of obstruction of justice, let’s consider the case of William (Cold Cash) Jefferson.  I don’t know how many of you are aware of this but there is some serious trouble coming for Nancy Pelosi, over this one.  She and the remainder of the Democratic leadership have been stonewalling any attempted getting an investigation going against Jefferson.  So much for draining the swamp. That situation is going to be playing very large as this investigation goes forward this summer.  Indeed, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it played large next summer as well, going into the 08 election.

* By the way have you noticed that most of the stories you see on places like CNN, don’t even mention that Jefferson is a Democrat?  Gee, why would that be, I wonder….

* In the meanwhile We see where to ABC news, their latest polling data with the Washington post, shows the congressional democrats are statistically tied amongst the people as regards who was the stronger leadership force.  That’s a 24 point swing toward President Bush.  The bit with Jefferson, and the show trial conviction with Libby, is going to trend further away from the Democrats, as more folks catch on to what they’ve been up to.

* Fairly strong rains here today. Yard work, and work on the truck, both out.  One thing I did get to do was the INSIDE of the truck.

You see, we took Ray the Cat to the vet last night… we took my truck as opposed to my wife’s car on the idea that the fur wouldn’t get all over the leather seats, and wouldn’t show as bad on the light brown interior, as opposed to her interior, which is black on black.. and cloth, at that…. Which turned out to be a good move, but it was still a cleaning effort.

Going to have to show that car to you one of these days… next sunny day.

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) said Tuesday that the Bush administration has done nothing to defuse a “quiet riot” among blacks that threatens to erupt just as riots in Los Angeles did 15 years ago.

The first-term Illinois senator said that with black people from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast still displaced 20 months after Hurricane Katrina, frustration and resentments are building explosively as they did before the 1992 riots.

Sean Hackbarth, American Mind, hacks Obama’s arguement to shreds:

Outside the tourist haven New Orleans wasn’t so hot before Hurricane Katrina hit. Post-Katrina black-on-black violence got so bad the National Guard was called in to keep order. Mayor Ray Nagen, the incompetent one who blamed everyone else for his city’s problems, earned re-election.

As Sean said, Crying Ray Nagin’s New Orlean was no prize before Katrina.

Our friend Don Surber notes the number of stories showing up about the Republican front runners and their supposedly ‘trophy’ wives.

My Tennessee bureau is all upset by it, but Margery Eagan’s column in the Boston Herald was a hoot:

Ah yes. The claws are out to attack the trophy wives.

John McCain is on his second wife (5 1/2 years in a POW cell does put a strain on a marriage) and 20 years after his divorce, Fred Thompson married someone half his age (actually two-thirds). Oh and Rudy Giuliani is on wife No. 3. Or is it No. 2 still since his marriage to his cousin was annulled?

But whereas Joe Scarborough’s remarks about Jeri Thompson’s wife were mean and crude, Eagan’s remarks were bitchy and fun.

You see, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. McCain and Mrs. Giuliani all have — to quote Punky Brewster — “boobs, Henry!”

One quality Hillary Clinton doesn’t have.

Come to think of it; the wives in question have three other qualities which apparently make them fair game for the liberal press:

1: They’re Republicans

2: Unlike Hillary Clinton, they actually are of a mind to STAY with their man, and have no political ambitions beyond being first Lady.

3: They are noteworthy for the incredibly small chance of hearing them utter the words “We are the president”.

Addendum:  (David L)   Democrats too have trophy wves.  It is just that the prize package takes a somewhat different form.   John Kerry has a trophy wife.  In Kerry’s case the trophy is worth an estimated one billion dollars, give or take.

TOKYO-AP- Honda Motor Co., Japan’s No. 2 automaker, will continue to make gas-and-electric models of its Civic sedan, but stop offering the hybrid Accord with the new model expected to go on sale later this year, company spokesman Yoshiyuki Kuroda said in Tokyo.

The Accord hybrid, which is sold only in North America, was a dud, selling just 25,000 since going on sale in 2004, and just 6,100 last year.

Even in Japan, were gas is significantly more expensive than it is here, these things are simply not selling, where people have a choice in the matter.   But the trend is already in;

Remember that not so long ago, there were laws put into place in a couple of states (not surprisingly, New York and California ) which made it illegal to sell incandescent light bulbs after a set date.  The idea, of course, was saving energy.

What do you suppose the chances are that before very long we are going to see legislation introduced in the Congress to outlaw the sale of purely gasoline fired automobiles and trucks?  The principle, you see, of government removing our ability to choose, has already been established.  You tell me; what’s to stop them from doing exactly that?

Ah, yes… it must be that time, again:

WASHINGTON —AP- In a rare public discussion of her husband’s infidelity, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that she probably could not have gotten through her marital troubles without relying on her faith in God.

So, here we have someone who has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of enthusiasm for anyone of faith, and a member of a political party which is associated most strongly with an anti-Christian attitude, and particularly, the anti-gel of whole attitude, someone who only involves herself with such matters, when she finds herself politically challenged in some fashion.  Just like someone else we’ve discussed here in the past, Outside the door of the chruch he’s not darkened for years, huge Bible in hand, that he’s not cracked in years.
Perhaps it is worthwhile to note where she made these earth shaking admissions;

The forum, sponsored by the liberal Sojourners/Call to Renewal evangelical organization, provided an uncommon glimpse into the most personal beliefs of Clinton and rivals John Edwards and Barack Obama. The three candidates were invited by Sojourners founder Jim Wallis; most of the other Democratic candidates appeared on CNN later Monday to discuss their faith.

So what we have here, is pandering, and little more.
