Unfortunately, the bill we are going to be considering is the one reported out by the Senate Intelligence Committee in October, S. 2248. It did not have to be this way. Thirteen Senators joined me last week in asking the Majority Leader to instead bring up a bill that includes the changes approved by the Judiciary Committee last month. . . .

By choosing the Intelligence Committee bill over the Judiciary product, Senator Reid has made things much tougher for those of us who think the courts — not Congress — should decide whether the companies deserve immunity. He’s also made it an uphill struggle of those of us who want more court oversight of the broad new surveillance powers included in the bill. . . .

We have a big fight on our hands, and unfortunately, the deck is now stacked against us.

All of this stems from Reid’s refusal to honor the “hold” placed on that bill by Chris Dodd, who has been in the Senate for 24 years

No, Glenn, all of this stems from the far left of the Democrat party being unable to recognize that the war in Iraq is more popular than they are. Reid, for all his faults, has it figured out. Why can’t you?

I am not all that keen on popularity awards.  It  does not seem appropriate to vote for one member of a particular field unless you are familar with the entire field.   I do say that polls are interesting.

What I find interesting about this year’s award is they ought to be renamed the Michelle Awards.   Michelle, with her two blogs, got six positive awards and one negative.

As a mere mortal, I suggest that we find some higher category for Michelle.

One interesting point about how welll Michelle did here is that we hardly saw Glenn mentioned at all. I’m unsure just what to make of this.

I think the reputation of the IntraProfessor was the result some inside the Beltway media attention.   The professor simply does not put out that much original content.

On the  other foot, the amount and quality of original content Michelle puts out on her own blog alone is staggering.   I have seen suggestions,  but don’t have the links handy, that she must have a team blog because no one person could possibly put the volume and quality Michelle does.   I don’t even think law professors are equpped to compete with Michelle.  Mere mortal technicians certainly are not.  She is simply amazing.  I’d take my hat off to her, but the glare off of my dome would be too blinding.

The notion that Mr. Clinton will be a “shadow president,” effectively circumventing the constitutional limitations on presidential service, presents a campaign opportunity for the GOP.

So if neither a Senate nor executive position will do, what does work? While it’s probably not something the Hillary campaign would want us to contemplate, we should remember that there are three branches of government, and that it is widely anticipated that there will be one or more vacancies on the Supreme Court during the next presidential term.

Well, if there was ever a a lack of a reason to make sure Hillary Clinton doesn’t get the White House, we lack no longer. (Shudder)

There are those who will argue that Bill Clinton has no qualifications for the role. They are correct of course. I’m one of the ones so arguing. But since when does not having qualifications prove a roadblock to a Democrat attaining power?

Hillary Clinton is a case in point, if there is anybody that is singularly unqualified for the task of being a senator, it is Hillary Clinton. And yet, there she is…. supposedly representing a state that she didn’t even live in until six weeks after she swore an oath of office. She got this job on the basis of… what, exactly? What specific talent, what experience does she bring to the task of being a Senator? She has none. Even the position she now holds, it is one of opportunity only, not conviction.

So how is it that we are to assume that a Justice William Jefferson Clinton would be any less opportunistic or any more qualified?

By the way, The Jawa Report has a picture in a caption contest up, that more or less proves some people get really excited about a Hillary Clinton presidency… or something.

Dan McLaughlin, Red State, says “Don’t Bet On It .”   I say two words, Anita Hill.   The ‘rats raised holy heck about Hill’s allegations, which amounted what bad dating ediquette, dirty jokes and a public hair.

The ‘rats presented Hill and what three co-workers.  The republicans would have Katheleen Willey, Genifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Juanitta Broaddrick and a whole host of former Clinton bimbos to present. 

I don’t think that Mrs. Clinton wants to put that much dirty laundry out in public air.   That B.J.  Clinton ever wishes to testify under oath again.   Or that the ‘rate could keep the testimony out.

Further the ‘rat profess to swear by the American Bar Association ratings.  What kind of ABA rating could a formerly disbarred attorney with no judicial experience get, even from the ABA?

On the bright side, if B.J. were to get nominated, Senator Chucklies would finallly get to be the smartest guy in the room..

NEW YORK —AP- Dan Fogelberg, the singer and songwriter whose hits “Leader of the Band” and “Same Old Lang Syne” helped define the soft-rock era, died Sunday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. He was 56.His death was announced Sunday in a statement by Anna Loynes of the Solters & Digney public relations agency, and was also posted on the singer’s Web site.”Dan left us this morning at 6:00 a.m. He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side,” it read. “His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.”Fogelberg discovered he had advanced prostate cancer in 2004. In a statement then, he thanked fans for their support: “It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years. … I thank you from the very depths of my heart.”

He’s one I’ll personally miss. His music was a part of my broadcast life for a long time. I’d always considered the album that he and Tim Weissburg made, “Twin sons of different mothers” to be one of the best I’ve ever heard.  It was one of 20 he made in his life. (“The power of gold” is a favorite) I have most of his albums here.

And yeah, I know, real men aren’t supposed to like soft rock. Forget that nonsense. I like ALL music if it’s done right. Dan’s always was.

The good news is that we did not get either the twenty-one inches projected on Friday or the eighteen as of yesterday.   The bad news is that the storm advisory runs through Seven tommorow morning.

At breakfast this morning the bus girl complained that she was disappointed by the lack of snow.  It was short the aforementioned totals.   She can still hope, because we are not out of the storm yet.

The local weather man is on a roll.   He has called for storms each of the last three Sundays.  Maybe God is Jewish and rests on Saturday?  However in all three cases, the storm was not as severe as projected.    Then one of these days, the guy going to get it right.

Vin Suprynowicz asks “How many more will die in ‘gun-free’ zones before the media start asking why?”

Police have identified Robert A. Hawkins, 19, as the assailant who killed eight people with a semi-automatic rifle (not an assault rifle) at the Westroads Mall in Omaha Dec. 5.

Chalk up eight more deaths to “gun control.”

The shooting was at least the fourth at an American mall or shopping center so far this year, including one in February in Salt Lake City.

Once again, the killer chose a “gun-free” zone.

Gun control amounts to victim disarmament.  It is insane.  If suicidal killers, like young Robert Hawkins, are not dissuaded by statutes prohibiting murder, there is no reason they would be deterred by ordinances, or policies,  prohibiting the carrying of weapons.

Memeorandum has several endorsements up today, from papers aroundthe country… mostly those “serving” in or near primary states.

I suppose it shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody, that almost universally.  The papers are putting their endorsements for the Republican nomination to John McCain.  No surprise, because we are dealing with the mainstream media here, and they will bow to anyone who is to the left of center.  As McCain has exposed himself as being over the last couple of election cycles.

The Democrat endorsements from these papers aren’t quite as consistent, varying back and forth between Obama and Hillary Clinton.

All of this to my thinking reveals a few things about the left, today. First, if you want the country to tilt left, and you’re forced to choose a Republican, McCain is the choice.  That they seem to be unanimous on as to who the Democrat nominee who would best represent the interests of the left, there seems a bit of an argument.

This is important in terms of the general election because in previous years, when there has been a dispute in one party or the other as to who would best represent the interests of the party and therefore the country, there has always been an undercurrent that the party would re-unify itself behind its eventual choice for the nomination.

However in this cycle, we are not seeing that.  The polls are suggesting that around 50% of Democrats would never vote for Hillary Clinton, even if she was to win the nomination.  Whatever else happens, this cannot bode well for Hillary Clinton’s electability.
It is perhaps less indicative of what’s going to happen to party unity after the election, regardless who gets elected. I have been saying for some months now that the split within the Democratic Party is deep, and likely unhealable by November 2008.what we’re seeing in these endorsements confirms my suspicions.
