A Look At Our Situation This Monring.

I’m a little concerned. I’ve spent a good deal of time going over the President’s speech, and my concern is that he seems quite willing to place the blame for this mess on the private sector. I’ve said several times, and laid out my case, as have several others, that this was not a failure of free enterprise but a failure of government. Yet here comes Bush last night, avoiding placing the blame on government where it belongs. My fear here is that once it’s placed in the public memory that freedom failed us, the Democrats will use this to add more and more regulation and governmental intrusion, which in fact was is the proximate cause of our current troubles.

Now, one can understand the reasons why he might not want to place such blame on government in a speech. For one thing, it would certainly be like tossing a stick of dynamite in a pan of hash, the way things would start flying around the proverbial congressional kitchen… just when you don’t need such distractions. Such is political life. But still, as Rick DeMint said on Fox this morning, the Democrats are already laoding up this bailout thing with stuff that going to take decades to get rid of and none of it good for our economy, so I’m less than pleased he’s about keeping Democrats happy.

I’ll tell you what I’d like to see… once this thing gets through Congress, I’d like to see McCain step out a little bit and start hammering on the Democrats who brought us to this pass. I’d like to see Franklin Delano Raines hauled up before a Grand Jury, and charged criminally, along with Jim Johnson. I’d also be interested in seeing a full on investigation mounted, of the relationship between these men and Barrack Obama.

Speaking of investigations the part of the stalking horse is played this time around by the FBI, whose investigation of this thing will likley turn up a few big names, possibly connected to Obama, and decidedly congressional Democrats. Among these would be Chris Dodd, Charles Schumer, and Barney Frank. Who, in my view should recuse themselves form this process, given their involvement in the problem’s creation.

 So too should Harry Ried,  who loudly accused President Bush last night of “fiscal dereliction of duty” over this crisis. Of course Ried ignores the fact that he and the other Democrats were making similar noisesto Frank when the President and congressional republicans tried to deal with this crisis they correctly sw coming back in 05.

Frank in particular went out of his way to deny anything was wrong, when John McCain and the Republicans tried to get Fannie and Freddie back to heel:

”These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ”The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”

Obviously this story is broad in scope and in implications, and I can’t hope to touch the whole thing in one post. But those are my thoughts on all this at the moment.

David Denning in the Edmund Sun,from Oklahomo, this morning:

What a contrast there is between Franklin and Barack Obama. Obama is a Harvard lawyer who is a mile wide and an inch deep. He is only the latest in a long line of shallow elites that consider it stylish and intellectual to despise their own culture and heritage.

Nothing exemplifies Obama’s antipathy for American culture better than his statement that Americans “cling to” religion and guns out of frustration or bitterness. We only can suppose that Obama regards religion or firearms as aberrations that need to be eradicated.

Odd thing; Marx thought the same thing, didn’t he?

Denning goes on:

When Obama refers to “my Muslim faith,” the verbal gaffe resonates as a Freudian slip because of Obama’s thinly veiled hatred for this country’s unique culture and institutions. Obama sat for 20 years in a church where the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr preached “goddamn America.” He only resigned from the congregation when it became politically expedient to do so. When earlier this year, Michelle Obama said “for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country,” can we conclude that her husband disagrees? Is it not remarkable that Michelle Obama can be so small-minded as to find nothing in the history of the United States that merits her admiration but the personal success of her husband?

Quite so.  There’s a massive gap between Obama and mainstream America that Obama will never understand, and both he and his wife have made clear they don’t WANT to understand.

There is, of course much more to this article, and I urge you to go and read.  I suspect there are a number who will consider this the gasping opine from a flatlander who has no connection to America. But of course, that’s the point of the article… he’s arguing from the perspective of America… not in the throes of Marxism as Obama envisions it, but as it is. Perhaps, one reader argued last week, that’s why Obama spent so much time campaigning in Europe… he’s better connected there than here. He, like Denning, suggests it is this gap which will cause Obama to lose.

Know what? He’s quite correct.

Fox:

John McCain will suspend his presidential campaign Thursday and has asked to postpone his debate Friday with Barack Obama so the two senators can return to Washington to help negotiate a Wall Street bailout, an approach to the financial crisis and campaign that Obama rejected.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system,” Sen. McCain said in mid-afternoon remarks to reporters in New York. “If we do not act, every corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.”

The Republican presidential candidate asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone his first debate with Obama, which is scheduled to take place Friday night at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

Obama responded by saying that such disruptive measures were unnecessary.

So, when faced with a choice of doing the work of the people, work he was already elected to do, or working for his own political advancement, Obama has chosen to serve his own political advancement.  That’s all we need to know about Obama’s fitness for office.

Love him or hate him John McCain flies by his instincts.   McCain has suspended this campaign, and asked that Friday’s debate be postponed, James Taranto, Wall Street Journal:

McCain said Wednesday he is directing his staff to work with Democrat Barack Obama’s campaign and the presidential debate commission to delay Friday’s debate because of the economic crisis.

In a statement, McCain said he will stop campaigning after addressing former President Clinton’s Global Initiative session on Thursday and return to Washington to focus on the nation’s financial problems.

McCain said he wants President Bush to convene a leadership meeting in Washington that would include him and Obama

Taranto adds with respect to BO:

Early reports are that Obama wants the Friday debate to go on

McCain has taken the bull, or this case a bear, by the horns.   If McCain is instrumental in forging a market stablizing agreement all while BO preps in Florida, color the election over.

Oh by the way, BO said he would return to Washington if he could be helpful and if he was asked.  The fact that BO is staying in Florida tells you what Dirty Harry Reid thinks about BO alleged leadership.   Now, B.J. Clinton wasn’t much of a leader, but he smart enough to get in front of the parade.   Alas BO doesn’t even know enough about leadership to fake it.

• Boortz this monring discusses breifly the issue with Sarah Palin and her relationship with the press.  This topic also came up yesterday at OTB. The usual argument gioes she really doesn’t need a more hostile press, they might help make her look bad if they get mad.  Well, given what we’ve seen of hostile coverage of Palin thusfar from the usual suspects…(How many rumors went unchecked from the DInosaur media?) one wonders if anyone would be able to tell the difference between the current situation and a more hostile media, or if such a thing is even possible.  My read is she’s showing them exactly the respect they deserve. That won’t make the press happy, but then again, there is of late an inverse reaction between what makes the press happy and what the voters like. Who can forget the whackjob left in the press for example, demanding Trig‘s birth video be made public?
• So Clay Aiken comes out of the closet. Not that I watched the show all that much, (Donna does) but is there anyone who didn’t understand this one going in, even without him saynig anything?
• Althouse today, notes a ban on bumper stickers at the U of Illinois, and quips:
  

  : I understand the focus on bumper stickers. Too much transparency if the faculty parking lot has rows and rows of Obama stickers.

  Well, exactly. Still, I cant say I’m overly happy with this kind of nonsense.Rather totalitarian, no?

  I have no way of judging whether the Wall Street bailout is a necessary evil or an impending disaster. But we’re in this mess, ultimately, because our political elites thought it was good social policy to encourage banks to give mortgages to uncreditworthy people, resulting in what Sailer months ago called the “Diversity Recession” (if this doesn’t work, make that the Diversity Depression). In other words, if poor people in general, or blacks or Hispanics in particular, were less likely to be approved for a mortgage, the only possible reason was racism or classism or whatever.

  Correct, and an argument we’ve been making here for years, and in particular the last few weeks.  In reality what we’re seeing here are the consequences of trying to even out not opportunity, but outcome… which is also a discussion we’ve had many times previously.

• On this I note also, Jonah Goldberg saying in part:
  

  ….we shouldn’t let invocation of the Great Depression — and our fear of it — justify all of this New Deal talk. Say it with me: The New Deal prolonged the Great Depression. In fact, if anything it was the New Deal itself that made the Great Depression “Great.” By 1938 one in six Americans were still without jobs.

  That’s a clue for what our reaction should be, people. I’ll say this again, the government misrepresented itself to the banks and thereby shuld be held to pay for the damages and set things right again. Not so the individuals who set about putting themselves way over their head debt they never shuld have taken on. they signed the documents… it’s a little hard to claim you didn’t understand what you were singing now.

  Missed it by THAT MUCH

  The more we see from Joe Biden, the more the words of Limbaugh come to mind about how Hillary Clintonisn’t out of this yet.  And comments from Obama himself of late aren’t doing much to dispell that particular meme, either.  Roger Simon suggests that Biden is trying to derail Obama. Well, I dunno. I agree that if he wanted to sabotage Obama, he could hardly have done a better job by intent than what he’s apparently managed to do by just beng Joe Biden. And there are times when I wonder about the intent factor, too. Which also speaks loudly to a Clinton end run.  Now, the one comparison we’re not hearing, particularly from the Obama-Tanked dinosaur media, though is to Thomas Eagleton. And claims by Obama that he’s proud of his choice seems as close to the kiss of death as no matter.

• I’m amazed that there’s no indictment yet for that kid who hacked Sarah Palin’s E-mail. They’re still working on it, I hear, though, so we’ll see. In the end, my take is that nothing will come of this, because Palin will get a chance to appear magnanimous. Democrats will thereby get to save face. I see this hacking though as  part of a trend. Case in point;  Bill O’Rielly’s site was hacked, too. Why is it Democrats resort to what can only be described as Stalinist tactics?
• Another example of Leftist going Stalinist; Al Gore, today, calling for civil disobedience to stop coal plants… essentially echoing Obama’s veep, Joe Biden… Are you folks along I-79, I-80 I-71 and I-77 paying attention, here? Voting for Democrats is voting for your own demise… and along with it the country.
• Interesting happenings north of the border, perhaps best described by Lawrence Martin in Toronto’s Globe and Mail:
  

  Here we go again. Another Canadian election where, for fear of the bigot label, there’ll be no honest debate on immigration.

  Well, hey… why in the world should Canada’s left be any different, any less race baiting, than the American left?

• Mickey Kaus writes about the Honda Fit.  I’ve driven one, myself. Remember I mentioned cars like the Carolla that are ideal for people who feel guilty about driving, and really don’t LIKE to drive? Here’s another case in point, writ larger yet, by being built painfully smaller. I’ve seen bigger and more comfortable Harleys. It wouldn’t take much more than a dirt bike to total the thing and everyone inside. Sorry, no, I choose LIFE.
• Note to Nancy Pelosi:  this is not what most people regard as “leadership”. It does make excellent use of your finger guage training, however. Anyone still wondering why Congress is at record low approval ratings?

• Bette Midler, supposedly has stopped touring in order to save the planet. Of course, that her ticket sales have been dropping had nothing to do with her announcement. Frankly, I think her biggest contribution to the environment is that she won’t be “singing” publicly for a bit…. noise polution being the serious issue that it is. AC/DC like to say Rock and Roll ain’t noise polution. True, Then again, what Miss M does, doesn’t qualify as rock and roll, either.

This morning, I logged in to see that a WaPo/ABC pollhas Obama up by 9 points over Mc and a large part of Obama’s lead has to do with the economy. Considering what we know about where a lot of the blame goes for the current economic state we’re in, my first thought was, “How the hell can people trust Democrats to get us out of a mess they enabled?” Then I read AJ Strata’s post where he took a look at the party breakdown, and it became clear:

[Their] straight party sample breaks down 38% Dem, 28% Rep and 29% Ind. When Indies are asked which way they lean the sample goes 54% Dem, 38% Rep and 7% Ind.

Is anyone surprised with a 54(D) – 38(R) sample the result is 52(D) – 43(R) race? Not me.

Moral of the story? Always check the fine print of a poll before banging your head against a wall.

Well, exactly.  I’ll point out that the last several cycles the polling data has heavily leaned Democrat… only to make a sudden and pronounced rightward shift in the last days before the election.  this was particularly true for Bush 41, as an example. Mark Steyn agrees:

I dunno about a nine-point lead, Kathryn, but clearly the Obama campaign self-destruct effort managed to stall during Bailout Week.

Well as to that, I’m not sure that the most recent destructive battling between Obama and Biden have had the chance to sink in to the electorate just yet. If we’re to take the timing of the convention bounces for each party, we may well assume there to be a two week lag between each action and it’s Newtonian response.

‘Well, I Tell You What, It Helps in Ohio That We’ve Got Democrats in Charge of the Machines’

Thus spake The Messiah September 3 in Ohio. Ah, yes, it sure does help having partisan hacks at the controls, doesn’t it?

For all the get out the vote efforts Democrats encourage every year, they sure go out of their way to suppress the votes of Republicans every chance they get.

I knew it was merely a matter of time before Obama gave us an only slightly tacit admission that his campaign was dependent on vote fraud. I will remind you that Democrats were in charge of the vote process in Florida in 2000 and were at the reins of the districts in and around Philly in 2000 and 2004, which turned in vote totals for Democrats of 200% of the number of registered voters.

And need I really remind you of Obama’s connection to ACORN or ofACORN’s connection to vote fraud?

Voter fraud is alive in well in Ohio and it run by a partisan Democrat, Peter Bronson, “If Ohio polling looks like Chicago, ‘thank’ Brunner“:

Brunner sent a memo telling county election officials to reject those applications for absentee ballots if the box was not checked. “Failure to check the box leaves both the applicant and the board of elections without verification that the applicant is a ‘qualified elector’,” she wrote.

But that’s contrary to state law and Brunner doesn’t have the authority, according to the lawsuit and an opinion from Hamilton County’s Republican Prosecutor Joe Deters

I installed two plugins last night, that apparently don’t get along.

1: Title Capitalization

2: Maxblog’s Ping Optimizer

The combo is apparently an issue. What that does is this;  Which someone posts to the blog it goes out and Google and other info services to come and crawl the site. Trouble is if I go back and edit the post for a typo, it goes back and pings the list of info services again. They tend not to like being hit very often like that for no reason. The Optimizer, when it’s working right, likes to keep the pinging of the servers down to a dull roar, by pinging only the first time you post something, more or less.

The Title Capitalization plugin is supposed to filter post titles so that they have proper caps, the way, say, a newspaper would.

Where these two get into an argument is that what the Optimizer sees is the altered value, and so when it goes out looking for a POST of that filtered value, of course it doesn’t exist, being instead actually stored in the unfiltered version of the title.

Who knew?

Well, now YOU do.

The upshot of this is that we were dwn for a shot time while I untangled the database mess. We seem to be OK now, though.

• Summer is officially over. I had to use my rear defroster today for the first time this season on the way into work.

   Christine Hurt comments on whether the bailout is a good idea: “That’s the question I was asked by my fellow conferees at my non-corporate conference. My answer has to be ‘compared to what?’ . . . Would the market be able to right itself, after breaking more than a few Wall Street eggs, eventually? Not sure.”

  Oh, yes you are. After the degree of government tampering with the free market process, you know full well it won’t recover on it’s own, particualrly when the original problems…. the mismanagement at F&F and the lending policies imposed by the government…  are still largely intact.   But the point of “Compared to what” is well taken. I’d like someone to tel me what alternative they have to the bailout, particularly given government’s culpability.

• We linked yesterday the Jawas and Rusty’s report on the Palin smears. Boortz notes it this morning, and says:
  

  Within one hour of Jawa Report posting the information, the Winner and Associates employees had removed all the videos from Youtube and began to remove any traces of his activities. In time? Apparently not. Convenient.

  Not unexpected. Turn the light on and the roaches scurry away. Obama needs to be called on the carpet for this one, bigtime. Who’s going to do that? Democrats? Yeah, right. Time to speak up, John. Patrick, are you listening, man?

• Boortz also wonders, correctly, what would happen if SNL would run a skit suggesting Obama had committed incenst with his daughters, as they did with Palin.
• Speaking of Palin, she certainly seems to be drawing a lot of nutballs. Naomi Wolfe for example, seems to have more foam under her nose than usual.
• Anyone wanting proof that the Democrat party is not about energy independance will want to check out Biden’s comments on coal. 
• The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article up, backgrounding the efforts of William Ayers and Barrack Obama to radicalise schools in Chicago. Yes, they do have a working relationship and more.  David’s already mentioned this this morning, and Bruce mentions it this monring, too, saying in part:
  

  Stanley Kurtz digs into one of the more interesting and yet mostly unanswered questions of Obama’s past:

  Despite having authored two autobiographies, Barack Obama has never written about his most important executive experience. From 1995 to 1999, he led an education foundation called the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC), and remained on the board until 2001. The group poured more than $100 million into the hands of community organizers and radical education activists.

  It’s not just his “most important executive experience”, it is his only real executive experience. Yet he doesn’t mention it or tout it. Why?Well perhaps it is because of what the CAC did and aimed to do. His relationship with Bill Ayers aside (which any fair-minded person would conclude was more than casual), what was the CAC Obama chaired?

  The CAC’s agenda flowed from Mr. Ayers’s educational philosophy, which called for infusing students and their parents with a radical political commitment, and which downplayed achievement tests in favor of activism. In the mid-1960s, Mr. Ayers taught at a radical alternative school, and served as a community organizer in Cleveland’s ghetto.
  In works like “City Kids, City Teachers” and “Teaching the Personal and the Political,” Mr. Ayers wrote that teachers should be community organizers dedicated to provoking resistance to American racism and oppression. His preferred alternative? “I’m a radical, Leftist, small ‘c’ communist,” Mr. Ayers said in an interview in Ron Chepesiuk’s, “Sixties Radicals,” at about the same time Mr. Ayers was forming CAC.

  CAC translated Mr. Ayers’s radicalism into practice. Instead of funding schools directly, it required schools to affiliate with “external partners,” which actually got the money. Proposals from groups focused on math/science achievement were turned down. Instead CAC disbursed money through various far-left community organizers, such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (or Acorn)..

  Over the years which Obama chaired the organization and sat on its board, it gave 100 million in funds to these activists ostensibly to foster improvements in “education” among the poorer parts of Chicago. Instead it was really aimed at fostering radicalism.

  Why is the MSM being so quiet about this, I wonder? Gee.

•  We didn’t hear much from that anti-Iran rally after it happened… at least not nearly so much a we heard going into the thing. Now, we have some idea why. Any time the voice of the people can be heard, you can count on the story getting buried. Pajamas Media was there, by the way, and has free video.
• I note this morning a lot of traffic on the “McCain can’t use the internet” ad that Obama foisted off on us a few weeks ago. Seems Biden is now saying it was “terrible”. What the heck is this about? Good Cop /Bad Cop? If Obama wants to apologise for the ad, perhaps he should do it himself.  His chocie for Veep, after all has a bit of a reputation as a loose cannon, with a big mouth… and the American people won’t know which to take seriously… Biden’s mouthing off or Obama’s stoney silence on his offense against the disabled, and against wounded military types…. Obama’s public scolding of Biden not withstanding. Even assuming this back and forth is genuine… it’s costing a pile of credibilty. And it would appear the people are starting to notice.
• Speaking of Creds, does George Will have any left as a ‘conservative commentator”? Not by my lights. Of course the signs he was losing it have been there for some time, now. 
• Pakistan is reportedly hunting feverishly for the AlQuieda cell that blew up the Islamabad Mariott.  Yeah, wel maybe they can team up with OJ. I’m sure he could use a break from the relentless pursuit of his wife’s killers across every freakin’ golf course in the country.
• Speaking of stabbings, let’s assume I won’t be taking a Greyhound Bus anywhere anytime soon, OK?

He was speaking about the role of the White House in a financial crisis.

Billy raises a point I’d thought of, but neglected to mention in my haste to get this posted and things done here at work too… and adds one I’d not thought of.

Let’s not even go into the whole “experimental TV set” thing, okay? I think that’s been done well enough. How long must we dwell on the fact that the crumb, Roosevelt, was over three years away from the White House “when the stock market crashed”? Not long, I think.

The thing that’s really important to understand here is the fact that creatures like this meld October 1929 and The Great Depression together as one monolithic edifice of history, and naturally with the savior FDR over-arching all.

Well, of course, Biden is going to invoke Democrat party Deity, and compare himself and the top of the ticket to said Democrat party Deity.  While a little frightening, it’s telling I think, that the truth had to be so badly mangled to be able to work the FDR mantra into the talking points.

Well, I dunno. Among some people… the Democrat party base, for example, perhaps. I suppose their understanding STARTED fouled up, though, so nothing lost there. We will always see this stuff coming back again until such time as people with actual braincells take over the conversation.  I think however, that the amount of attention being called to this by mere citizens such as ourselves, does aid us to that end, by aiding  the electorate’s understanding of what and whom we’re dealing with.

The Obama campaign has cried foul when Bill Ayers comes up, claiming “guilt by association.” Yet the issue here isn’t guilt by association; it’s guilt by participation. As CAC chairman, Mr. Obama was lending moral and financial support to Mr. Ayers and his radical circle. That is a story even if Mr. Ayers had never planted a single bomb 40 years ago.

It is no small wonder that BO does not want to talk about this association with the unrepentent terrrorist Ayers.   For this is not the Barack Obama David Axelod has been trying to pawn off as if fit to be President.
