INDIANAPOLIS —(McClatchy NS)  It’s a story Hillary Clinton loves to tell, about how the Chinese government bought a good American company in Indiana, laid off all its workers and moved its critical defense technology work to China.

And it’s a story with a dramatic, political ending. Republican President George W. Bush could have stopped it, but didn’t.

If she were president, she says, she’d fight to protect those jobs. It’s just the kind of talk that’s helping her win support form working-class Democrats worried about jobs and paychecks, not to mention their country’s security.

What Clinton never tells in the oft-repeated tale is the role prominent Democrats played in selling the company and its technology to the Chinese. She never mentions that big-time Democratic contributor George Soros helped put together the deal to sell the company, or that the sale was approved by the administration of her husband.

Granted that Obama’s a real gem. But frankly there’s one reason he’s doing as well as he is, just now, and that’s Hillary Clinton.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The bruised economy limped through the first quarter, growing at just a 0.6 percent pace as housing and credit problems forced people and businesses alike to hunker down.

The country’s economic growth during January through March was the same as in the final three months of last year, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. The statistic did not meet what economists consider the classic definition of a recession, which is a retraction of the economy. This means that although the economy is stuck in a rut, it is still managing to grow, even if modestly.

So much for that meme, then. It’ll be interesting to see the word parsers dance around this one.

Did you see the story about the prisoner in an Arkansas jail suing the county because he’s lost over 100lbs while in jail?

Seems to me the Prisoner owes the state a rather large sum of dollars, or at least thanks. Do you know how many people are paying the long buck for mail-order food that does the same thing?

I wonder; would a lawsuit against the county for not paying for Jenny Craig be upheld, if the prisoner had wanted to lose weight?

Did anyone notice the two goons that were standing behind Reverend Jeremiah Wright as he delivered his speech at the national press club?  Did they looked familiar at all to you?

They should.  They were from the Nation of Islam.  Yes, that’s Farrakhan’s group.

You remember Farrakhan; no one who told everyone that he had been brought up into the mothership.  The one whom Jeremiah Wright himself gave his Trumpeter award to, and has honored him subsequently as well.

I don’t think you’re going to find many people who will argue that Louis Farrakhan is a complete nut bag.  Yet holding is not bag in high esteem is nothing new for Reverend Wright.

So how is it that Senator Obama is just now finding out about this, and is shocked by it? so was Mr. Obama lying then, when he told us about how Reverend Wright was his spiritual adviser, his mentor, and friend, or is he lying now, when he tells us he didn’t know about these radical views that Reverend Wright confirmed he holds at yesterday’s press club dinner?

Either way, I would say as an offhand comment that the senator has a serious credibility problem to overcome.

When you’re on the defense, as with Rev. Wright, choose one explanation and stick to it.

“I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community,” Obama said of Wright. “I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.
 

BO on Wright today, Associated Press:

“I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday,”

The Reverend Al Sharpton, New York Post:

During what a source described as a “heated” phone call yesterday, Sharpton told Obama he was disappointed with the Illinois senator’s words on Friday, when Obama said “resorting to violence to express displeasure” was “completely unacceptable and counterproductive.”

BO you are denouncing the wrong reverend.   While we think little of either Wright or Sharpton, there is a clear distinction.   Wright has called for Divine retribution, and such is his right.    Shartpon in inciting a riot and that is criminal.    While Wright may be wrong, he is not a man of violence.   On the other hand, Sharpton is a man of violence.    BO forgot the demagoguery.   Stop the violence.    Give Sharpton the Sister Souljah treatment, if you have the courage of your convictions.

• I note by way of John Miller that the editor of the Boston Herald keeps a portrait of Che Guevara on his wall. Oh, these art lovers, huh? I suppose that the editor’s political leanings have nothing to do with the lack of readershp that Kurtz mentions yesterday.
• The Herald’s not alone, of course. Word that the New York Times has lost around 10% of it’s Sunday circulation has crossed my desk here. I suspect the reasons are the same as the Herald’s.
• A couple of Honorable Mentions in this week’s Caption Contest at OTB. Must be losing my touch.
• It occurs to me that all these Obama allusions to being a member of the right wing were misspelled. He is of course, more accurately described as a member of the Wright Wing.
• There are a number of people who think Obama’s message is getting lost in the press. But I’m not so convicned what’s come out in the press isn’t his whole message. After all, Obama has gotten to rock star status. What kind of controversy would surround a Rockstar do you suppose, and how would it differ from what issues have been covered in the press as regards Obama? When you present a fluffy image, expect the controversy to be fluff, too. On the other hand, when you associate with Racists and Marxists… and Obama having presented both sides to the American people is now ssuffering their judgements in both matters, and coming up well short of the mark.
• Do you know we had more people killed in ethnic violence in Philly last weekend, than we did in the whole of Iraq? Same for Chicago. Clearly, the US Military is over-extended. It’s all Bush’s fault, and we have to withdraw as quickly as possible from Chicago and Philly.
• Lots of people hurt in Suffolk, VA… Driver VA actually, when Tornadoes went through there at about 4pm eastern yesterday. Nobody killed, amazingly.
• On that note, I see where they’ve been having so much problem predicting Hurricanes that they’ve decided to give up the practice. Apparently the global warmng folks are getting embarrased.
• Meanwhile, more evidence of Global warming is currently being shoveled in Anchorage… a record snowfall, there. I see also it was snowing along I76 in Maryland, this mornng. White-out conditions, I hear.
• Boortz says Hillary Clinton is setting herself up for a 2012 run. Not so fast, Hillary. You’ve not lost this one, yet… Of course her working on a 2012 run suggests she’s thinking McCain would beat Obama. She’s likely correct, here.
• Did you see Bill Kristol making nice purring noises at the Clinton campaign? I’m not sure I WANT to know what’s up with that,  though I suspect it may be an extension of Limbaugh’s Operation Chaos. Not like Kristol and Limbaugh to sit on the same side of the fence, though, particularly on something this edgy.

One Wright makes two wrongs

The Reverend Jeremiah Wright now says he was quoting the Iraqi ambassador when he made his famous “chickens are coming home to roost” comments after the September 11 attacks.

Apparently he meant the U.S. ambassador to Iraq because during that sermon, Wright mentioned Edward Peck, who once held that position. Just days after 9/11 Wright said, “America’s chickens are coming home to roost. Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred, and terrorism begets terrorism. A white ambassador said that y’all — not a black militant. Not a reverend who preaches about racism.”

Problem is, Ambassador Peck never said “America’s chickens are coming home to roost” — nor did he suggest America engages in terrorism. Peck did make some foreign policy references in speaking about bombing Haiti, Cambodia and Panama — but said nothing about Hiroshima or Nagasaki as Reverend Wright also claimed.

So says Hume, last night.

But the story, you see, goes farther than Hume takes it.  The obvious snark of the person Wright is “quoting” being April Glaspie, aside, Wright was likely quoting Saddam’s  ambassador  during one of his anti-Western screed delivered at the UN.

The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources has releases a state report on the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota    The currentlly recoverable portion of the Bakken formation represents about ten percent of known domestic reserves.   That is just over one percent of total reserves. James Macpherson:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Bakken shale formation in North Dakota holds up to 167 billion barrels of oil but only about 1 percent of it can be recovered using current technology, a new study says.

The study released Monday said current technology could lead to the recovery of about 2.1 billion barrels in North Dakota’s portion of the formation, where oil-producing rock is sandwiched between layers of shale about 10,000 feet under the ground. The estimate of recoverable oil included in the study by the state Department of Mineral Resources was similar to that of a federal study released earlier this month.

With the price of world oil at one hundred twenty dollars a barrel and raising, if the government would just get out of the way, I sure somebody will find a way to reover that other ninety-eight percent.

Word from Scott Fybush, this monring, that Big Ron O’Brien has passed on.  Ron was a great one, and held court at some of the great stations of the country. I recall catching his show several times on WCFL, back when that station actually meant something,a nd again at WNBC before Alan Combs decided they could all go home.

Ron was a blogger, too, turns out.

A great talent. He was only 56.

You know, Barack Obama’s involvement with Bill Ayers ought to be enough for every reasonable person to heave them both over the metaphorical side.  That’s bad enough.

If I were Obama, though, I would be wishing hard for the Revvin’ Jeremiah Wright to fall down a well.

That’s Billy Beck, this morning. And of course he’s correct.

He notes Michael Eric Dyson, on PMSNBC as saying:

“Let’s all get together and agree that we should deal with the substantive issues, not these distractions.”

Ummm. no, Mike… this IS a genuine iissue, and you guys are going to need to do something better than simply trying to sweep it under the rug if you want to survive to the final round. Here it is: Wright and his racism is a genuine issue by virtue of Obama sitting in his pews for 20 years. You don’t get that deep into someone’s councils without signing on to them, and after that long the politically motivated and timed disconnection isn’t going to be easy, clean, or effective.

But what’s this I hear from Ben Smith’s Blog, that it was  Clinton supporter that invited Wright to speak at the National Press Club in the first place?  Apparently all you need to do to make Wright, and thereby Obama, to look like a screaming racist fool is to give him a platform to speak. Now, there’s something less of timing involved here than meets the eye since apparently Barbara Reynolds invited Wright just before Obama’s Philly speech on race a while back.  Still, one can’t help but wonder if Wright wasn’t invited as a known quantity.

Obama has only himself to blame for this. It was, in the end, political expediency that had him hooking up with Wright and his racism in the first place. Obama wanted a means to give himself ‘black street creds’, and he found it. He’s now stuck with it.

But, that doesn’t mean we have to be stuck with Obama.

One of the signature elements of the Clinton administration, and of the Clintons themselves, is their degrading treatment of women.

Isn’t it rich that a woman, Stoddard, offers no more respect to another woman, Mrs. Clinton, than she did to all the various Clinton bimbos.  What goes around, comes around.

Of course the Clintons are trash.
