Fox News Channel’s Jamie Colby has a new report up talking about the big showdown in Berkeley, CA tonight – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH – when patriots from around the nation will hold an all-day pro-troop demonstration and protest against the Berkeley City Council for their reprehensible attacks against our military men and women.

There’s this, too;Manu Raju at The Hill notes some interestying moves in the Senate as regards all this:

Senate Democrats left two days of legislative business officially open last week, hobbling GOP efforts to bring up a bill punishing a liberal California city for scolding Marine Corps recruiters.

Republicans said Democrats clearly wanted to avoid being forced to choose between the Marine Corps or Berkeley, Calif., known for its liberalism and fervent anti-war positions.

Instead of adjourning at the end of a day as usual, the Senate “recessed” twice, a move that, under Senate rules, slows the process of adding new bills to the calendar. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) did not adjourn until last Friday, effectively pushing back floor consideration on the GOP bill until Tuesday – the same day that the city council is likely to tone down its call for Marine Corps recruiters to leave town.

“The only reason to recess is to block something, and the thing that got blocked by Reid’s stall tactic was the Semper Fi Act,” said spokesman Wesley Denton, referring to the bill introduced by his boss, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.).

“Democrats have chosen not to defend the Marine Corps, but to pander to anti-war protesters and Berkeley officials that are actively trying to impede military recruitment.”

No shock, this.  we’ve always known where the loyalties of Harry Reid lie… and it’s decidedly NOT with our country, or it’s military, or for that matter, freedom around the world.

Ya know… there’s only one thing that can make John McCain attractive, and I think I see what that is, now… Democrats.

• John Hawkins points out MSNBC‘s David Shuster isn’t alone.
  

  We all know by now about the controversy surrounding MSNBC’s David Shuster and his allegation that Chelsea Clinton was being “pimped” by her family in order to drum up support for her mother. He’s apologized twice, been suspended, and along with that rec’d a strong rebuke from Senator Clinton herself.

  Someone else who has apologized on behalf of MSNBC is none other than Shuster’s hero and Nutroots fave Keith Olbermann.  johnny dollar over at Olbermann Watch has a special remix video of Olby’s apology, in which he first praises Shuster before issuing the apology. Mixed within the video are clips of Shuster which prove Olby’s praise is unfounded, as well as a clip towards the end of Olby himself accusing President Bush of “pimping” General David Petraeus – an accusation he made September 20, 2007.

  Of course, the reason the Democrats don’t take offense is they benefited from it. He who has ears to hear…

• James Joyner is asking where Hillary got her $5 million. That’s OK, so is Newsweek.  It’ll be interesting to watch John McCain squirm when he’s asked how this $5 million got in under McCain Fiengold. It’s already interesting, to a point, given we now have the press openly questioning the Clintons…. at least, the ones who have come out and challenged the coronation of Princess Hillary. I can’t think of a better indication of a left in turmoil than the press actually reporting on the misdeeds of Democrats in an election year.
• Speaking of Hillary Clinton, David’s already mentioned the bit with her campaign shakeup. One simply doesn’t shake things up in the campaign at this late date. Not if success is on the menu. As an example of things going the other way, John Kerry did a shakeup last cycle, if I recall rightly. December, I think.  But in any event what I find interesting is Hillary’s choice to run her campaign… Maggie Williams. This is someone who has a very questionable record, legally. For example, she’s up to her armpits in the Johnny Chung funding scandal.  Her testimony was investigated by the Justice Dept.  She is unshakably loyal to Clinton, which to my mind means she’s more likley to be involved in extra legality in support of that loyalty… Example, Chung.  She strikes me as an idealist whose sense of right and wrong got lost along the way to wherever it is she thinks she’s going. Idealism has given way to knee-breaking pragmatism.  I’ve no doubt she’ll serve Hillary’s power quest well.  But given the excesses she’s already demonstrated, it seems to me she bears watching by the legal authorities, particularly the FEC.
• And why did Hillary pick just now to remove Patti Solis Doyle? Not, I as has been suggested, because Hilly lost the three states over the weekend, I think. Rather, that removal occurred because of the polling trends we’re starting to see… polling trends which suggest that even with the Super-delegates in Clintonista control, we’re going to see Barrack Obama in a rather unambiguous delegate lead by midweek. (Some reports today already had that situation, based on the counts from Maine.)
• And why is Obama surging? Well, Hillary Clinton, herself, is the most obvious answer, of course, but it goes a little deeper. I suspect and suppose that what we’re seeing is a cult of personality surrounding Obama.  Consider the personality cult surrounding Ron Paul. I have always supposed that the personality cult is why Paul does so well among certain fringe groups… an attraction which has nothing to do with his stated policy pronouncements at any given moment.  That cult puts together an unshakable minority… around 8% or so of voters.  I have recently begun to see Obama reaping the same fruit from his own supporters.  The reason for the disparity in numbers between Paul and Obama, given their similar approaches in personality projection, is that the liberal mindset has always been more prone to such personality cults.  Which would also tend to explain why Paul does so well among the mindless liberals who’ve been following him around like little lost puppy dogs. I expect as reality dawns on these, they’ll be Obama voters.
• Dodd Harris reports at OTB that Scotland Yard has completed it’s investigation of the Bhutto murder, and concludes that the Pakistani authorities got this one right.  Readers may recall I suggested they would, the day after the killing. I am sympathetic to Mrs Bhutto’s supporters, but as I said at the time, Pervez Musharraf isn’t your enemy, here.
• Neal Boortz suggests that McCain said many of the right things at CPAC. And Neal’s correct, he did. He made a plausible case for himself… if you discount his history. I will not, barring something he manages to do or utter which will over-ride and smooth over those previous words and deeds. I suspect a number of other people will be thinking the same way, which in turn will affect the turnout come November. And yes, I know, President Bush says McCain’s a “True Conservative”. However, perspective becomes an issue. Longtime reaaders of this blog know I consider Bush to be a centrist at best… and McCain lost to Bush in 2000, because he came down to the LEFT of Mr. Bush. To claim he’s a conservative now, requires the willing suspension of disbelief.  Or something.
• I see Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager has quit after her recent losses. That’s unfair, I think. There are just some places you cannot sell manure.
• Vinyl making a comeback? Well, no, not really… but there’s an upswing going on. And while records may be making a bit of a surge, the major labels are going Bye Bye, says Variety. It’s taken a while, but finally we’re starting to see major inroads on the monopoly of the major labels… took almost 30 years to do it. And you know what? Given the attitude of the Majors, more power to the indies, I say.
• And what’s this I hear about WXRT/93.1 in Chicago? Say what you want about Clear Channel, but for my money the bigger problem is CBS radio though I suppose it’d be fair to say Corporate Radio is the issue… Entercom is pulling the same stunt here in Rochester at 96.5/WCMF. Local radio as such is falling to the corporate mentality, as I predicted it would when I left the business years ago. Much as the big labels in Music, radio is suffering under a corporate illness. All thta’s left is to wait for it to burn down, and hope that the independent owners can make a comeback from the ashes that the corporates leave behind them once they figure out they’re losing money the way they’re going and start selling off broadcast properties. Don’t misunderstand; I’m all for profit. But central control is not the way to run things… in government… or in radio. You’ve got talented people working for you in all these markets. Why aim for the ‘corporate’ sound when what they’ve been doing for generations at the local level served the needs of the listeners?
• AI can’t leave it that negative… so, some good news from the broadcasting world; Scott Fybush over at the Northeast Radio Watch advises us that all the signals brought down by that snow and wind in Scranton when WNEP’s tower gave up, are back on, if at somewhat reduced coverage. Given they only had less than a year to operate it, I don’t know why, but WNEP also replaced the analog transmitter that got destroyed when the tower fell on the transmitter building. I gather they picked up a used one with somewhat less power than their original one. Likely, someone’s spare.
• Crazy Uncle Hugo is reportedly threatening cutting off oil sales to the US? Yeah, right, Hugo. Like you can afford that income loss? Face it, Hugo. You screwed up. And just for point of reference, it’s not like you can sell your oil to anyone else… Nobody else can refine the stuff.
• Single numbers here in Rochester last night. THe kind of weather that gives brass simian statuettes their status of legend.  the Wasn’t much warmer most of the day. As David already noted,and as a result of the weather, we had a 36 car pileup on I-390 perhaps 5 miles south of here… a stretch I drive on daily. One fatality. 24 others were in the hospital, of those 6 were T and R.  Whiteouts caused it, mostly. It’s right along by the airport there, and that’s a bad stretch when the snow blows from the northeast as it did today. That and stupid driving, from what I saw of it. Only thing that kept more people from getting killed is they were already on around 40 instead of the posted 55 because of the snow issues. And guess what the young woman who died was driving? Yep… a sub-compact. Just think about all the fuel she was saving. Matter of fact, I’m hearing unconfirmed reports from those who saw it, that suggest all the injuries in this accident were limited to the smaller cars. Work it out, America. This ain’t rocket science. I see Chuck Simmins has a post up about his involvement. Note my comments there.

  Quite. (You may recall I commented that John McCain was starting to sound rather suspiciously like John Kerry.) The point I’m making here is the problems with McCain as a Republican candidate are quite real… and his supporters ignore these problems at their peril.

Tom Lantos of California, the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress, has died, his spokeswoman said Monday.Lynne Weil said that Lantos, 80, passed away at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center in suburban Maryland.Lantos, a Democrat who chaired the House Foreign Affairs Committee, disclosed last month that he had been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.

It’s interesting…

Tall and dignified, Lantos never lost the accent of his native Hungary, but his courtly demeanor belied the cutting comments he would make in committee if the testimony he heard was not to his liking.

“Morally, you are pygmies,” he berated top executives of Yahoo Inc. at a hearing he called in November 2007 as they defended their company’s involvement in the jailing of a Chinese journalist.

Interesting that this should come up just before the Olympics there when so many are signing statements swearing they won’t berate the Chinese Government. And I wonder if his objection would be so loud, in this case.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -(AP)- Roy Scheider, the actor best known for his role as a police chief in the blockbuster movie “Jaws,” has died. He was 75.Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, hospital spokesman David Robinson said. The hospital did not release a cause of death.However, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital’s Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the past two years.

(Shrug) Personally, I never really liked Jaws. Terror flicks… which Jaws unquestionably is, just don’t do it for me.

And he’s one who had an impressive body of work even without Jaws.

Personally, I always best enjoyed his work in 2010.

When Mrs. Clinton’s senior advisers are all in a panic, it can only mean that Mrs. Clinton is in a panic.   Further, Mrs. Clinton has now thrown her campaign manager under the bus, Ben Smith, Politoco:

I don’t see it as those working against McCain as the ones selling out. Indeed, I see a vote for McCain as selling out both the party and the country. I fail utterly, to see the big difference, frankly between McCain, and Hillary Clinton, on both domestic and immigration issues.  Even in the comparative bright spot in his shtick, the Iraq war, McCain foundationally misunderstands what we’re about, there, as is in clear evidence when he starts championing ‘constitutional rights’ for terrorists.

Consider McCain’s recent statements as regards staying in Iraq for the next 100 year being ‘fine with him’. It’s fine with him, simply because he’s unwilling to do what it takes to win in Iraq. That becomes very clear when he’d rather trust and side with the leftist ACLU than to listen to our military advisers.

Under the best of conditions, war isn’t pretty, it certainly isn’t compassionate, except by quick result. Therefore, the best war is won quickly. We can try to water it down by refusing to torture our enemies, as McCain wants us to do, but if we aren’t willing to do certain things to our enemies, especially when our enemies are willing to do those very things to us, then we as a nation are not ready for war. Sorry, we’re just not.

And let’s not forget that John McCain’s supposedly so pro military, that back when Bill Clinton was downsizing the military, so as to pay for huge increases in social spending… (Remeber the “peace benefit?”) … John McCain didn’t stand up against that downsizing. He was “Missing In Action”, in reality

Matter of fact, consider John McCain’s statments in the leadup to the Iraq war. What was his position on the matter,  other than saying what an easy task it would be?  He was taking then, as now, a position of political expediency, not of conservative principle.

Further yet, it’s outright farcical to fight a war and at the same time let people come across our borders completely unchecked, and the McCain-Kennedy bill does just that, and lets us into the mind of McCain just a little at that. Barring the bellowing of the right over the issue, he’d still be pushing that nonsense.

Let’s also not forget McCain/Keating/Fiengold… possibly the biggest single attack on free speech seen since the revolution.

And further still, let’s consider John McCain teaming up with John Kerry in 1993 telling the American people that there were no more POW’s left alive in Vietnam. Perhaps you’ve forgotten that?

Let’s remember too, McCain putting pressure on President Bush over the Swiftboat ads.

Let’s recall McCain screaming about President Bush’s “tax cuts for the rich.”…a play directly from the DNC handbook.

Finally, he’s making pro-life noises now, but should we recall his 1999 statements? “In the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade, which would then force X number of women in American to undergo illegal and dangerous operations.”

Explain to me, how this guy is supposed to be any less damaging to our country than either Hillary Clinton or Barrack Obama. I don’t see it.

Face it; No matter who, of these three, that gets into office, will cause an unmitigated disaster for our country. Given we’re all equal on that score it comes down to who gets the blame for it. If the Democrats get in and cause such disaster, they won’t be able to elect a dog catcher in Tyson’s Corners. The Republicans if they get into office, similarly.

In the end, in a rather roundabout fashion, this election will decide, by virtue of the resulting left-leaning disaster, who gets tossed out of Washington for the 20 years following 2012.

Yes, Civil war in both parties seems likely to me.

The usual suspects are already complaining about civil war happening in the Democratic Party…. Frank Rich, at the New York Times, for example, perhaps without intending to, marks the revolution on the Democrat side as one being fought by the press:

The same news media that constantly revisited the Oprah-Caroline-Maria rally in California ignored “Voices Across America: A National Town Hall.” The Clinton campaign would no doubt attribute this to press bias, but it scrupulously designed the event to avoid making news. Like the scripted “Ask President Bush” sessions during the 2004 campaign, this town hall seemed to unfold in Stepford. The anodyne questions (“What else would you do to help take care of our veterans?”) merely cued up laundry lists of talking points. Some in attendance appeared to trance out.

But I’m glad I watched every minute, right up until Mrs. Clinton was abruptly cut off in midsentence so Hallmark could resume its previously scheduled programming (a movie promising “A Season for Miracles,” aptly enough). However boring, this show was a dramatic encapsulation of how a once-invincible candidate ended up in a dead heat, crippled by poll-tested corporate packaging that markets her as a synthetic product leeched of most human qualities. What’s more, it offered a naked preview of how nastily the Clintons will fight, whatever the collateral damage to the Democratic Party, in the endgame to come.

Thomas Edsall, meanwhile points to the Civil war happening under the Republican banner, posting last month:

As the pared-down field of presidential candidates returns to battle today in preparation for next Tuesday’s primary, the GOP faces the prospect of two struggles: one, an intra-party conflict to determine who is going to be the Wall Street/national defense establishment candidate; and, two, a civil war in which the winner of the first conflict takes on Mike Huckabee, the Iowa victor who is leading a right-populist/evangelical insurgency.

The initial GOP contest is to determine whether John McCain, leader of the national defense wing, will defeat Mitt Romney, who now carries the mantle of anti-tax, economic conservatives, to become the overall choice of the party’s mainstream – or whether Rudy Giuliani will stage an improbable comeback.

Whoever takes the New Hampshire Republican contest on January 8 will face what is likely to be a far more divisive challenge from Huckabee in the next round of primary and caucus states. This fight threatens to fracture the Republican party – recalling the schism engendered by the 1964 Rockefeller-Goldwater battle.

The elephant in the room, for both parties, is the long-standing push by both parties toward the ‘center’. The more both parties move away from their base and toward “the center”… .the more pronounced that war will be.  This is more of a problem for grass-roots Republicans who have seen the perception of what constitutes that ‘center’, since to get to their goals, all leftists really need do to see their socialist dreams enacted, if the baseline drift left last twenty years are any guide, is to sit back and watch it happen.

Thus we have the more overt objection to John McCain from the conservative end of the Republican party …a base that has been all too often ignored in recent times, …. than we see objection from the far left over Hillary Clinton.

But make no mistake, the Democrat split from their base is nearly equal to that of the split among Republicans from theirs. Thus do we see, for example, someone who was being called the presumptive Democrat party nominee being forced to very publicly loan herself five million dollars. (By the way, where did that money come from? Dubai, per chance?) Thus do we see the race coming down to a major fight over “Super Delegates”… in itself amusing since the original purpose of the “Super Delegates” was for the party of equality, the Democrats fight off a primary run from Jesse Jackson.

Both conventions are going to be rather like a train wreck; Fascinating to watch, a lotta people are going to get hurt, and it’ll take years to clean up the mess.

And here’s something I don’t know as anyone has made note of as yet; The congressional Races. How will these convention floor fights play on the congressional races?

The sad part here is that in both cases, what we have here is the result of both parties holding victory at the ballot box over principle.

But, I dunno. Nuts? Certainly she is… no question.  That said, I think she may have a point, for reasons she’s not considered.  Remember what happened to others that got between Hillary Clinton and power, before….. Vince Foster, for example.

Feb 8 (IPS) – Biofuels are making climate change worse, not better, according to two new studies which found that total greenhouse gas emissions from biofuels are far higher than those from burning gasoline because biofuel production is pushing up food prices and resulting in deforestation and loss of grasslands.

“Emissions from ethanol are 93 percent higher than gasoline,” said David Tilman, an ecologist at the University of Minnesota and co-author of one of the papers published Thursday in the journal Science.

Remember:  Corn is fer drinking, not driving.

A government minister has warned that inbreeding among immigrants is causing a surge in birth defects – comments likely to spark a new row over the place of Muslims in British society.

Phil Woolas, an environment minister, said the culture of arranged marriages between first cousins was the “elephant in the room”. Woolas, a former race relations minister, said: “If you have a child with your cousin the likelihood is there’ll be a genetic problem.”

The minister, whose views were supported by medical experts this weekend, said: “The issue we need to debate is first cousin marriages, whereby a lot of arranged marriages are with first cousins, and that produces lots of genetic problems in terms of disability [in children].”

Bluto puts this under a headline of “This explains a lot”… and boy, does it.  Bolding is my own, and it backs a point I’ve long made about cultural influence.

An oldie but a goodie for rousing the ire of social liberals: Not all cultures are equal…. and this post from Bluto brings out a prime example of why. BERKELEY, Calif. — As six Republican senators devised a plan to yank $2.3 million in federal funding for Berkeley programs, the mayor of the famously liberal city apologized Wednesday for his hard stance against a Marine recruiting center.

Looks like talk isn’t always cheap, especially when the talk involves crapping all over your own country and the people who put their lives on the line to protect it. But wait, there’s more:

“That letter will probably be pulled back and maybe more moderate language will be put in place which is appropriate I think,” said Berkeley mayor Tom Bates.

Well, you could try moderating the language, Master Bates, but the only language real Americans want to read in the letter is your own resignation, swiftly followed by those of each of the stupid jackasses on the city council who voted for your original resolution.

Indeed. And yes, I think these idiots need to be made an example.
