I note with interest the current Feeding Frenzy on Al Franken. Bruce McQuain correctly observes:
The question, of course, is will Democrats now apply the Roy Moore standard or the Bill Clinton standard to Franken?
The fact that Franken has not resigned yet, indicates that Franken believes they will apply the Bill Clinton standard. Indeed there are a large number of people already rising up to defend him, apparently oblivious to the double standard that they’re operating in…. The majority of them screaming for the head of Roy Moore.
Of course double standards are hardly new for the Democrat Party. After all, we are talking about a group of people who has been encouraging us to open the doors of women’s rooms All Over America to men…. The party who kept electing Ted Kennedy to the Senate for 45 years in spite of or perhaps because of Chappaquiddick, the party of Bill “you better put some ice on that” Clinton and so on …and yet in recent weeks have declared themselves to be the final Arbiter of what is and is not moral sexual behavior.
But the one thing that the left has yet to develop is a sense of History. Clearly, Al Franken is among these. His perception of the fragility of his position is hampered thereby.
As was demonstrated by Jim Traficant some years ago, Democrats will support you up to the point where you threaten their power, and their goal of an ever more powerful and intrusive government.
Become an impediment to that goal by becoming an embarrassment, and you’ll find yourself in Fort Marcy park with two bullets to the back of the head and a gun in your hand that won’t fire.
Regardless of how that comes out, what we are witness to right now is the Democrat Party just starting to get a rough idea of the depth of the pile of dog poop they’ve managed to step in. They’re being judged by their own recently acquired and selectively applied standards now, and it’s not going to end well.

More to the point, it increases when women marry and when they begin bearing children. So, the research shows, women tend to prefer jobs that offer flexibility: the ability to shift hours of work and rearrange shifts to accommodate emergencies at home. Such jobs tend to be more predictable, with fewer on-call hours and less exposure to weekend and evening obligations. These advantages have a negative consequence: lower earnings per hour, even when the number of hours worked is the same….
Certain job characteristics have a big impact on the gender earnings gap… Subject to strict deadlines and time pressure… Expected to be in direct contact with other workers or clients… Instructed to develop cooperative working relationships… Assigned to work on highly specific projects… Unable to independently determine their tasks and goals Occupations with a lower level of these characteristics (like jobs in science and technology) show smaller gaps…. Men’s earnings tend to surge when there are fewer substitutes for a given worker, when the job must be done in teams and when clients demand specific lawyers, accountants, consultants and financial advisers. Such differences can account for about half the gender earnings gap. These findings provide more nuance in explaining why the gap widens with age and why it is greater for women with children…
Yes men and women as groups receive different compensation. Goldin deems this a problem, to be solved. I deem a fact of life to be lived with and accepted. Further, Goldin’s cure would be worse than the problem she purports to remedy. Different groups are different. Should the Slimes launch a crusade to insure that blood hounds are equally represented at dog tracks, and if not why not? How about replacing bull fights in Spain, with bovine bouts, with equal presentation of both bulls and cow?
Back to human, at birth women have circa a five year longer life expectancy than men(PDF). What does Goldin propose to do to remedy this gap.
Men die from work related injuries about twelve times the rate of women, from Bureau of Labor Statistics:
Women suffered 2,506 (or 8 percent) of the 31,567 job-related fatalities reported from 1992 to 1996. During the same time period, women accounted for slightly less than 50 percent of the workforce.

Women may experience fewer job-related deaths and injuries because they typically are employed in less dangerous jobs such as teaching or other service occupations. Few women work in the construction trades or in other high-risk jobs where work is performed outdoors.
The difference between male and female occupational deaths is not a disparity. It is a statistic. Now if women were put down their steno graphs and take up say truck driving that alone would reduce the sex disparity in income, job related death and carpal tunnel injuries. Progress?

The consequences of incompetence:
But as was revealed Sunday, in what is becoming a common theme in these mass shootings, no amount of background checking would have stopped the shooter in Sutherland Springs, Texas from purchasing his firearms, because the federal government failed to do its job properly. It’s not the first time. . . .
But even when the FBI has all the data needed to flag someone from purchasing a gun, there have been examples of gross incompetence as well.
Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people during evening services at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., in 2015.
Roof was not legally permitted to own a firearm due to an unlawful drug possession charge from earlier that year. Roof’s record listed the wrong arresting agency and because of this error, he was able to legally purchase the weapon he used in the shooting. Victims of family members killed by Roof have filed suit against the U.S. government because of this avoidable error.
First, directly to the topic at hand. The problem isn’t that we don’t have enough laws restricting guns, the problem is the unintended consequences involved with governmental incompetence.
Thing is, there’s larger implications here as well;
The founders of this great nation made great efforts in constructing a minimal government. One that was limited constitutionally.
Look, aside from the idea of government running amok which has certainly occurred as well, I am convinced that the natural tendency towards governmental incompetence is why they went to all that trouble.
The largest lie ever told in the history of man is that man can be perfected by means of legislation. What we see here is why. Man simply isn’t up to the task.
So the Democrats are proclaiming this huge victory… Mostly on the strength of having won the Democrat strongholds of New Jersey and Virgina. They’re currently trying to make the whole thing a referendum on the presidency of Donald Trump.
But the facts are a little different than the news media and the leftists, (but I repeat myself), claim.
Let’s ponder that the Republican candidate for governor in the state of Virginia was Ed Gillespie. To begin with I can’t think of a more establishment candidate then Ed Gillespie other than perhaps Mitt Romney. The entire movement has since the beginning been against the Republican establishment and the Democrat establishment for that matter. That’s where the tea party came from. As I keep saying, the presidential election last year was not about Donald Trump. It has always been about eliminating the establishment.
The voters who started that movement saw the GOP establishment forever leaning increasingly left and moved to put a stop to it. Trump just happened to ride that movement’s coattails.
Now, Gillespie, far from embracing that movement, did everything he could during his campaign to separate himself from Trump and from the Tea Party and for that matter, anything and everything conservative. He spent most of his time trying to make himself relevant to a group which will never vote Republican regardless of how much they kowtow to the demands of the left. It’s no surprise then that his effort failed to engender trust amongst the already establishment -hating GOP electorate.
Combine with the idea that the Democrats were energized by the butt-kicking they took a year ago, and it’s a wonder that Gillespie did as well as he did.
The reasoning for the loss in New Jersey is of the same vein. Chris Christie on his best days could never be considered conservative, and no more is his lieutenant governor. They each spent copious amounts of time and effort to try and be relevant to the left wing. That effort also was doomed to failure before it began.
The lesson from the losses in New Jersey and Virginia are simple, Direct, and everlasting. You’re not going to win elections by trying to appease the Looney left. The only way that Republicans are going to be winners is to actually be conservative consistently foundationally and fundamentally.
Alas, it’s a lesson they still haven’t learned.
