If you don’t live in the Northeast, you may not be familiar with Wegmans. Suffice to say, Wegmans is a regional (national?) legend in the grocery business. The store consistently gets high marks from both her customers and employees. People, myself included, love shopping their, and it seems that every employee loves working their. It is mind boggling.
In Rochester, if you want to impress your out of town visitors, you take them to one bigger Wegmans, such as Pittsford or East Avenue.
While Wegmans has store up and down the east coast, they have had no stores in New York City. That is in the process of changing, Wegmans is in process of opening a story the old Brooklyn Navy Yard, from Buffalo News (registration nag):
When Wegmans announced it would open its first New York City store on the Brooklyn Naval Yard, everyone seemed to rejoice.
The announcement went viral on social media, set Facebook abuzz and sent Wegmans trending on Twitter in New York City.
But the union trying to organize the store’s workers is not happy.
The Union Food and Commercial Workers, the largest grocery workers union in the state, has launched a campaign against the Rochester-based grocer’s arrival. The union’s website, GoodJobsBrooklyn.com, urges residents to send form letters to city officials
Wegmans is a giant in the grocery business. However their recent business model has been to focus on high end suburbs. As such Brooklyn and New York City amount to Indian territory, and in this case the Indians, the Union Food and Commercial Workers, are not giving up their territory without a fight. Wegmans sees the Brooklyn Navy Yard as toe hold for entry in the New York City market, and I suspect the UFCW sees it the same way.
This could prove to be interesting.
Today I am at College Point Queens. Haven’t been here for quite a while, I enjoyed visiting with old friends again. I’ve got some time off coming so this weekend I’ll be taking it with my lovely wife. I’m looking forward to the extra time at home. I like my job, & I like the people I’m working with. This morning I’m casting a wary eye toward the country of Greece, and the results of its recent move towards socialism. As ever, the move to the left has given the world to clear demonstration of what happens when you pay for socialist largesse with other people’s money. What we have going there, is unfortunately what we are going to see ourselves very shortly, because in a large degree we’ve been heading down the same path since 2008.
Greece, whatever else it might be right now, is a classic example of the direct result of applied Keynesian economic theory.
The socialists can’t blame greece’s troubles on military expenditures, given that with the exception of World War 2 and before that ancient times, Greece has never been involved in anything serious militarily speaking. It can’t be blamed on low tax rates given that tax rates thete, particularly on the upper levels of income are astronomical to the point of making American leftists jealous.
In fact, the Socialists had everything their way, implemented every wet dream that socialists usually have,and it failed, quite predictably.
The central government of Greece is now threatening to remove itself from the Euro, and the EU. It all candor, that’s probably the best news the EU is had for some time now. Instead of trying to bail Greece out, they should let it fall over. Stupidity should be painful. Let Greece and its economic failure stand as the ultimate repudiation of Keynesian theory.
Want another example? Fine …let’s pick something a little bit closer to home. Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico’s problems are large and interdependent, which makes solving them a complex and difficult task. Tourism is down, employment is low, poverty is high, and the island has suffered through the economic pain of falling home values, rising oil prices, and overall decreased competitiveness.
Employment stands out as a terrible problem: Only 40 percent of adults are working or looking for work (compared to 63 percent across the U.S.). Relative to local incomes, federal minimum wages and welfare benefits are pretty high (Puerto Rico follows federal law), which means companies hire less because of burdensome costs, and workers lack incentive to work, since they know that welfare benefits can provide similar income. Without more jobs available, those who do want to work struggle to find employment and often head to the mainland—contributing to nearly a decade of population loss.
And that’s pretty much the state of Greece finds itself in these days. As well as New York State. California, Massachusetts, Maryland, you get the idea. In other words just about every place the left runs things.
The left is forever pointing at the unsustainability of our current energy situation. Unsustainable?
Well, OK….
But when they’ve got proof in front of them such as Greece and Puerto Rico that the Keynesian driven welfare state is unsustainable, they ignore it and go “all in” any way.
Apparently they figure nobody will notice. And in so far as our mainstream lap dog press is concerned, they are correct. But increasingly we are seeing people coming to their senses, I’ll be in a little late. Let’s just hope it’s not too late.

2. On the morning of June 21, 2015, as about 20 people were dining at Pete’s Grill and Coney Island on the Detroit’s east side, a man walked in, pulled out a gun and said he was robbing the place. The armed robber was pointing the gun at everyone, telling them all to get down and not move, while demanding the workers “get to the register.” Instead of getting the register, an armed employee fatally shot the perpetrator. Pete’s Coney Island and all restaurants in Michigan are NOT “Gun-Free Zones” butt rather they’re “Self-Defense Zones” and permit Concealed Pistol License holders to legally carry firearms.

We have to explore the why behind the anger that led to the rioting in Baltimore to prevent it from happening again.
I look at so many things through a prism of personal finance. Money does make the world go around, and the lack of it can make your world very difficult, confining and hopeless. Given what’s happening in Baltimore and other underserved neighborhoods, many are asking: Where is the money going?
Oh we need to learn blacks are angry, and I suppose spend yet more tax payer dollars to placate the aggrieved blacks.

Since at least 1822, when the first recorded burning of a black church occurred in South Carolina, church arson has been the default response of racists frustrated with progress — or even the faint specter of progress — on civil rights. More than even lynching, burning houses of worship remains a go-to weapon in hate groups’ arsenal. Torching churches such as Mount Zion persisted decades after the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, 100 years after Booker T. Washington dined at the White House and 150 years after the end of the Civil War.
What’s the enduring appeal of this very specific terrorist act for those who wish to express hate?
What no calls to learn why the four* three remaining members of the Klu Klux Klan are angry? When a black is angry, it is the fault of the whites for not understanding blacks. Conversely, when a white is angry, is the fault of the white for not understanding blacks. One size fits all.
If you want to progress towards a post-racial society, it would help to hold all individuals to the same levels of expectation. The Reverends Jackson and Sharpton were not available for immediate comment.

Blogger Glenn Reynolds noted that when the South was solidly Democratic, we got Gone With the Wind nostalgia. Now that it is profoundly less racist, but also less useful to Democrats, it’s the enemy of all that is decent and good.
I note that the NAA[L]CP is calling for black congregations to protect themselves from violence, a suggestion I endorse. Yet is the NAA[L]CP suggest members of black churches exercise their Second Amendment Rights? I kind of doubt it.

As flames engulfed Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, a predominantly African American congregation in the tiny town of Greeleyville, S.C., Tuesday night, social media lit up with expressions of sorrow, speculation and outrage.
The fire was one of six at black churches in the past two weeks, and one of hundreds, possibly thousands, in the past two centuries.
Now back to the real world, Crawdad Hole:
One of the churches was a white church. One fire was caused by lightning. Another was caused by a falling tree limb that struck a power line. But two cases of arson neither of which is definitely a racial hate crime just doesn’t have the same zing.
Let me be clear – torching a church for any reason is despicable. The same goes for torching a mosque, synagogue, temple or any other house of worship, and that includes the Wasilla Bible Church. But let’s stick to the facts.
Lo and behold, two acts of God, wind storm and lightning, is God a racist? Then don’t let the actual facts side track an otherwise great media narrative.

For the umpteenth time in the last several days I have been preached at about “the social contract”.
Invariably, this has come from the lips of people who have no idea of the origins of that phrase.
I’d have to double check but to my memory it was Locke and Hobbes who first conjured it. And they were both screaming atheists.
And here’s a hint. They came up with that phrase, coined and recoined it, because at the bottom line they had no idea where ethics come from, and had to invent something for the purpose of discussing ethics.
Yesterday the US Supreme Court, threw out statutory law. Statutory law, according to the ruling yesterday, doesn’t matter.
Today, the US Supreme Court disregarded all cultural precedent, all history, and in fact removed the legitimacy of the government whose primary purpose is to support and extend the influence of the culture that gave it life.
Here it is; Rights are a cultural construct, and meaningless outside that construct. Rights are not universal.
When Jefferson wrote that “WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT” he was not speaking a universal truth at all. The operative word in that phrase is “WE”.
Rather than talking about a universal point of view, a universal truth, if you will, he was instead talking about the point of view of WE the new American culture. With this angle, many of the long-held myths about rights tend to disappear.
Consider; if it was in fact a universal truth that all men were created equal, it wouldn’t have been such a radical idea, for the time, much less then to now. Last I checked, it is quite true that a vast majority still do not consider these as any kind of truth, universal or otherwise; they consider them to be anything BUT self-evident. Royalty still exists, as do class structures, and slavery, as well.
Again, I say…Jefferson was speaking of the point of view of OUR culture, not that of others.
The fact of the matter is that RIGHTS ARE A CULTURAL CONCEPT, and are nigh on meaningless outside that construct.
Once the culture is allowed to fall either to the law, (or, in the case of anarchy, the lawless) ….even in an attempt to impose rights where they do not exist, what happens to real rights, which are a cultural concept?
They fail.
Forgive me, but I don’t see that as a particularly desirable outcome.
These last couple of days have been a man-made disaster, and the only one smiling about it are those seeking the failure of this country. Understand this clearly if nothing else, people. This is not about acceptance but about overthrow.

The tragic murder of nine black Christians in Charleston showed a remarkable community coming together and on the national state at lot of liberals getting down right ugly. Eugene Robinson is bitter that the South turned away from the democrats, and can read the Constitution, from San Jose Mercury News:
One hundred fifty years too late, the Confederacy may finally be coming to an end. Finishing it off, however, will require more than getting rid of an offensive flag.
Not that the astounding progress this week toward consigning the Confederate battle flag to the ignominy it deserves is a small thing. Flags are among the most important symbols because they signify allegiance — in this case, to a treasonous rebellion that sought the unimpeded right to buy and sell human beings and brutally compel their unpaid labor.

When the Supreme Court deigns to speak to a thorny social issue, that issue is settled for all time. The Constitution, in an secret addendum viewable only to self-anointed demigods in black robes, deems the Supreme Court to be the ultimate and final authority on both what is moral and just. So say the court. Long live the court.

Fellow serfs, bow down to the wisdom of your self-anointed masters. Give to Kennedy the full measure of respect to which he is deserved.
