Even Howard Dean called this “reform” plan crazy! “Reform” is in quotes because calling this reform is a lie. This is not reform it’s a complete socialist take over health care with rationing of care for the old and undesirable. If there was tort reform (anathema to the greedy trial lawyers like John Edwards, who coincidentally are huge Obama/DNC donors), coupled with responsibility, e.g. people not using the emergency room when they could go to the doctor or treat themselves, the costs of medicine would go way down.

I’d be happy to tell you about the EGEGIOUS ABUSES of the welfare system I personally witnessed firsthand everyday working for 3.5 years at a pharmacy in Covington. And, if this is such a great plan, why isn’t Congress and the President signing up for it? As soon as they have to eat their own cooking, I might be willing to listen. But they won’t because government health care “reform” (really a government take over of 1/7 of the economy) will be a complete boondogle like most government programs. Can you point to one instance of anything that government has done well in the last 3+ decades?

The intellectually honest answer is NO and the DOZENS of videos and articles below expose the lies and show what a debacle this will be if it passes. I urge you to SEE FOR YOURSELF!

George Will, Washington Post,  October 5:

Presidents often come to be characterized by particular adjectives: “honest” Abe Lincoln, “Grover the Good” Cleveland, “energetic” Theodore Roosevelt, “idealistic” Woodrow Wilson, “Silent Cal” Coolidge, “confident” FDR, “likable” Ike Eisenhower. Less happily, there were “Tricky Dick” Nixon and “Slick Willie” Clinton. Unhappy will be a president whose defining adjective is “vain.”

Professor Ann Althhouse:

Dithering Obama.

The word “dithering” has really attached itself to Obama.

Remember the way Bush opponents tried to get the word “quagmire” stuck on him? It’s an interesting political strategy, sticking a word on a guy.

Hat tip:  Glenn Reynolds, Instapundit.

Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read anywhere on the ‘sphere…The BitsBlog Nightly Ramble

usedcarramble

  • CASH FOR CLUNKERS WAS A CLINKER: Not that we expected otherwise, but the waste involved with the thing is staggering. The Christian Science Monitor:

American taxpayers paid a lot of cash for those clunkers: $24,000 for each new car sold, according to a study released Wednesday. That’s a lot of money, especially when the so-called “cash for clunker” stimulus program offered only a maximum $4,500 in cash for each person who traded in an old gas-guzzler and bought a new car.

Damn right… But I suppose I should have seen it coming. Such cost effectiveness is fairly typical for government projects. Including of courses health care. Speaking of that……

  • QUEEN NANCY IN ACTION: She unveiled her health care bill today. It’s the biggest one yet, both in terms of cost and in terms of sheer bulk. As frightening as this thing is, it strikes me as quite fitting that it should come out so close to Halloween.  According to polo’s either thing will cost us on the order of $894,000,000,000.00 over the next ten years.
Let me be perfectly clear about that point ; Nancy Pelosi is a liar.
You want proof?  Look at history.  Every government program that is, long including the one that this monstrosity is supposed to be replacing, has gone at least double the original estimates in terms of cost, and has come up well short of the goals it was supposed to achieve, in the doing.  it gets better.  To finance this monstrosity the Democrats’ plan a surtax on couples and make more than a million dollars a year.  The fact of the matter is that such a move will never pay for the program.  Once again history is the guide here.  Every single time we’ve been told the tax was “on the rich” the added burden for whatever program that the democrats were devising ended up on the shoulders of the middle class.  It happens every single time.  I’m telling you right now; if they manage to push this thing through, (and the only way they’re going to do this is on a strict party line vote) the resulting Democrat party bloodbath at the 2010 and 2012 polls will make 1980 look like a walk in the park.
  • ANOTHER STORY THE WHITE HOUSE WOULD RATHER YOU DIDN’T HEARAP says:

WASHINGTON — An early progress report on President Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan overstates by thousands the number of jobs created or saved through the stimulus program, a mistake that White House officials promise will be corrected in future reports. The government’s first accounting of jobs tied to the $787 billion stimulus program claimed more than 30,000 positions paid for with recovery money. But that figure is overstated by least 5,000 jobs, according to an Associated Press review of a sample of stimulus contracts.

A mistake? Yeah. Sure. Right. Even with that mistake the numbers don’t make any fiscal sense in terms of dollars per job. Sorry, they just don’t.

  • SETTING THEM UP: Glenn says today:
    Glenn Reynolds

    Glenn Reynolds

IF FOX ISN’T A “LEGITIMATE NEWS OUTLET,” does that mean the Obama Administration will go after them using Campaign Finance laws? Not until the second term, probably.

I don’t know as I’d put much of anything past this bunch in the White House at this point. What Glenn describes here is pretty much what Ortega’s been doing. And here’s the thing. Any subject, and I mean  any subject at all on which the press is critical of Obama and the response from the Democrats  is the same…the attempt is made  to delegitimize the source of such criticism. And if you think this isn’t all about image, why is the top Obama advisor now in charge of Corzine’s re-election failure? It’s clear, Obama doesn’t want the image of the bloodbath that has every appearance of coming in 6 days time from today.

  • WHO IS PULLING OBAMA’S STRINGS? So asks Liz Peek at Fox, today.
  • TODAY IS NATIONAL CAT DAY: Meow.
  • BITSBLOG BUMPER STICKER OF THE DAY: Isn’t really a bumper sticker, but I loved it anyway…

William Kristol makes a point about Pelosi that I’ve suspected these last couple days about both her and Harry Reid:

Wiliam Kristol

Wiliam Kristol

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to release the text of the Democratic health care proposal tomorrow, with the hope of bringing it to the floor as early as next Friday. Pelosi will claim that the Congressional Budget Office has scored the Democratic bill as deficit neutral over the next ten years.

Of course, there’s no guarantee the text Pelosi unveils tomorrow won’t be replaced at the last minute on the floor by a manager’s amendment that will change various provisions and, conveniently, won’t have been fully scored by the CBO–as happened with cap and trade.

Now, if the Congress were in its usual big government mode of oversight of business, and a business were accused of such tactics, they’d call it a bait and switch, and move to outlaw it in the strongest possible terms.

So why isn’t the GOP calling them on this?

davidl on October 28th, 2009

How do you teach a puppy not to poop in the house?    You rub his nose in it.   Hannah Giles,  Bir Government,  rubs the main stream media’s collective nose in their poop.

But rather than simply pointing a finger and complaining, here are some loose ends the media ignored, from our footage alone, that warrant attention.

With regard to the children:

· Baltimore-Why no mention of the toddlers that were in the room while James and I were being counseled on how to manage our underage prostitution ring?

· San Bernardino-The content of this video was largely ignored except for the part where Tresa Kaelke mentions she shot her husband. What about when she told us not to educate our sex-slaves because they won’t want to work for us? Or when we talked about making more money off clients who are permitted to physically abuse the girls? What about the whole transport-the-girls-in-a-school-bus-to-avoid-suspicion discussion?

Hat tip:  Jammie Wearing Fool:

Since Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe exposed ACORN and the media as total frauds, it seems the media still hasn’t learned their lesson.

Any dog will learn if you keep rubbing their nose in their own poop.

When it comes to dealing with Wall Street, President Obama seems to have traded in his position as our economy’s commander-in-chief for a different role: pundit-in-chief. He and his top advisors are suddenly very big on urging, advocating, recommending, strongly suggesting, and cajoling.

Arianna Huffington, Puffington Post.

So much for the rumor that I don’t quote liberal ch;ics,  Yes I am quoting Ms Huffington, but not respecting her.  So what.  Even Ms. Huffington seems to be becoming aware of the fact that Barrack Obama is gooerning with  neither a plan nor a clue.

  • LIBERMAN PLAYS THE GAME: He now says he’ll vote against the so-called “Public Option” … (What is Queen Nancy calling it now, the “Consumer Option”?)  _ . Well, of course the libtards are screaming bloody murder.  There seems a great deal of sentiment coming from the far left along the lines of Harry Reid taking a pound of flesh from Joe Lieberman for actually thinking for himself. What the libtards fail to understand is that Joe Lieberman is far more popular in his district that is Harry Reid, in his.  Certainly, Mr. Lieberman is more popular in his district than Democrats in general are, given the reaction the voters there gave the Democrat party endorsed candidate last cycle.  Not that I’d expect reality data their thoughts, at any given point, but it would be nice if every once in awhile it would happen. And the amount of bloodletting going on over all of this has most Democrats looking for another plan. Does anyone really think that any government takeover is going to fly? Well, anyone with brains… I guess I should have said that at the off, huh?
  • ALAN GRAYSON: PUBLICITY WHORE:Perhaps it’s the optimist in me but I refuse to believe that anybody could be this stupid without being intentionally so. I am left with the conclusion that he simply trying to draw attention to himself.  You know the guy is over the edge, when most of the Democrats are backing off of him, too. Most of them, anyway. Meanwhile, I hadn’t expected PresBO to be quite this tone deaf. My fault for under-estimating the guy, I suppose.
  • PERCEPTION ON THE ECONOMY SOURS: And the GOP isn’t gaining from it, says the WSJ:

But a dark national view of how everybody in Washington is conducting the public’s business appears to be preventing Republicans from benefiting from concerns about the direction of the country or the Democrat-led government’s handling of the economy, as the minority party often does.

In fact, disapproval of the Republican Party actually has ticked upward, along with the public’s general pessimism. Asked which political party should control Congress after next year’s midterm elections, Democrats now hold a clear edge over the GOP, 46% to 38%, a month after the Republicans were nearly as popular. In September, the Democratic edge was 43% to 40%.

“There was a bounce-back surge for Republicans, and that’s stalled,” said Bill McInturff, a Republican pollster who conducted the Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll with Democratic pollster Peter Hart.

“The mood in America may be blue, but attitudes toward Washington are just jet black,” Mr. Hart said.

That’s mostly because the Republicans have failed to become the party of “NO!” against the left’s strident calls for more government. Bruce McQuain recently used a statement of Jeb Bush (The Republicans in JB’s view, should STOP being the party of “No”) …to leap into the frey:

    Worst. Advice. Ever.

    Bruce McQuain

    Bruce McQuain

Seriously.  I hear this all the time, and it is nonsense. It gives credence to opposition propaganda spin.

It is bad advice because it conflates the job of legislators with the party’s job of building the party and attracting new voters.  And that’s true for both parties.  The GOP is supposedly the ideological opposite of the Democrats.  That would tell most voters that the GOP most likely to oppose what the Democrats propose in the legislative process.

Guess what – that makes them the party of “no”.  That’s their job, if they believe in the ideological principles which supposedly undergird their party.  As I recall it, the Democrats had absolutely no problem being the party of “no” when they were in the minority.  In fact, they reveled in it.  And look where they are now.

Well, that’s it, exactly. Jeb Bush continues the trend in his family toward centrism, at the cost of principle.  This has always been my objection to every single one of them.  Bruce goes on with:

On the other hand, where is the GOP’s plan to become more ‘youthful’? Where is it’s media campaign to change the “tone”?

Where is the plan to “apply conservative principles to 21st century problems?” Or, more succinctly, why hasn’t the party produced these plans in anticipation of the fight for Congressional seats in 2010?

    AWOL.

    I tell him:

The reason for that is simple enough, Bruce. They’ve still not caught on to Reagan’s example. He didn’t swing voters, young and old by modifying his position to accommodate them, he won them over by convincing them of the value of his position.  It’s a teaching process that the GOP has never caught on to after Reagan. Including, I’m afraid, both Bush’s.

Instead of standing up for and teaching the principles of limited government, what the Republicans have been doing for the last several cycles is leaning to the left and trying to modify those principles in order to gain power.  In other words all they really are is Democrat Lite. No bleeping wonder why they aren’t gaining any popularity even with the way the Democrats are screwing up.

Along those same lines, Armstrong Williams wonders if the Republican party is ready to lead, in his Washngton Times op-ed today. (Aside to the Times; Whoever wrote the headline “WILLIAMS: Is Republicans ready to lead?”  needs to be out of a job instantly.)

    ARMSTRONG WILLIAMS 5X7 UNSIGNED

    Armstrong Williams

    Says Williams, and rightly:

The balance-of-power question in Washington now may be one of “when,” not “if,” for the Republicans. In the wake of the 2008 cycle, analysts from all stripes thought the Republicans would be doomed to wander in the wilderness of the minority for at least a decade, if not longer. Today, that timeline appears to have narrowed considerably. But are they ready for such responsibility? If the recent past is prologue, I’m not optimistic. The Republican Party has failed to exert bold leadership. Too often the party seems more focused on criticizing its enemies than on conceptualizing new policy objectives. Most disconcerting is the Republicans’ lack of fiscal leadership.

House Republican Leader John A. Boehner recently summed up this sanguine attitude when he wrote, “Republicans lost our way on fiscal responsibility when we held the majority in Congress. Since then, we have held firm to our commitment to show the American people we learned our lesson by offering better solutions to hold the line on spending, rein in red ink and get the nation’s fiscal house in order.”

Tough talk indeed, but unlike most things in this town, that talk is cheap unless it can be backed up. It’s easy to stake principled ground when you lack the authority and power to act on those principles. But what happens when Republicans are suddenly thrust again on the leadership stage?

More than likely, it’ll be exactly what happened the last time, at least by the lights of the American people at the moment. I must say, I’m not optimistic, either.  Frankly, I begin to think that by the time they finally figure this out it will have already been too late, there won’t be any country left to salvage.

  • HE”S HOW OLD? John Cleese has a birthday today… he’s 70. Dodd Harris has a litte vid on him.
  • AN INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT SPENCER: The author of  ” The Complete Infidel’s Guide to the Koran.” is up over at Right Wing News
  • TERRORISM ISN’T DEAD: Bloomberg says:

Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) — Two Chicago men were charged with plotting to attack “facilities and employees” of a Danish newspaper that printed cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Muhammad in 2005, a federal prosecutor said.

David Coleman Headley, 49, and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, were accused of conspiring to assist in or perpetrate terrorist acts against the newspaper’s facilities, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald in Chicago said today in a statement.

Headley was arrested on Oct. 3 by the FBI’s joint terrorism task force. Rana, a Canadian citizen, was apprehended Oct. 18 at his home. They have been in federal custody since their arrests, prosecutors said.

    jyllands-posten-mohammed

Mark Styen looks at that and complains:

Two U.S. residents, one an American citizen, one a Canadian citizen, educated and assimilated, and enjoying a nice enough living to be able to afford to fly to Denmark to kill a couple of guys over a cartoon. In the long run, Afghan cave-dwellers and Waziristani goatherds are less of a threat than fellows like Messrs Headley and Rana. The company name — “First World Immigration Services” — is a rather droll jest.

Actually, I figure they’re about an equal danger.  Let’s not forget, either that  our current administration empowers these throwbacks, too. The increasing amounts of activity since Obama took over should be missed by nobody. Does anyone suppose that’s just coincidental?

  • MORE ON BARNEY FRANK: Feedback yesterday on that topic suggested mildly that I’d taken him out of context.  Well, fine. Let’s look at the whole line, shall we?

“We are trying on every front to increase the role of government in the regulatory area.”

Can someone please explain to me how exactly that changes the context?  Far as I can see, it doesn’t change anything at all.

Barack Obama may believe that his incessant whining about all the challenges his predecessor left him lets America know how tough he has it. The danger to his presidency is that it can sound awfully like “I’m not up to the job.”

Even the late great William F. Buckley  on rare occasion resorted to profanity, and as for myself, my speaking skills fall short of those of Buckley.   However Alan Greyson seems utterly incapable of expressing disapproval without having to resort to profanity.   Here is Representative Alan Grayson calling Linda Robertson a whore, video:

Hat tip, Gateway Pundit.

And now the one who campaigned on the promise to be a post-partisan president lauds Greyson, video:

Hat tips: Michelle; and Josh Kraushaar, Politico.

Oh sure Obama may consent to play an occasional round of golf with a woman, but he has no problems lauding a misogynist congressman who trashs women.

Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read anywhere on the ‘sphere…The BitsBlog Nightly Ramble

ramble4

  • A SECOND PLACE at OTB’s Caption Contest. Been a while since I’ve done anything with that, so It’s nice to see I still have the touch.
  • NO KIDDING? Slobberin’  Barney Frank (D-MA)  says Democrats are “trying on every front to increase the role of government.” (BBCT: Dave Hatter at Facebook) Gee, Barney, I’d have never jolly well known that. Nice to see you admit it though. And by the way, Barney… Pravda agrees.
  • CNN IN LAST PLACE IN PRIME: A richly deserved honor. Gee, guys do you suppose the tilt you guys have been placing on the news might be the problem? That’s one reason that the White House attempt to de-legitimize  Fox News is so incredibly stupid a move.  Clearly, the viewers given a choice of all the channels going, choose the one that the president and his minions go well out of their way to destroy…  Fox…. And of course, they love CNN at the White House, these days.    I wonder if it’s occurred to anyone that this is a clear indication of how far out of step the Democrats … particularly this administration… are with the American mainstream?
  • CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY CONVICTED OF FRAUD IN FRANCE: While my first reaction to this story is one of quiet satisfaction, I have to wonder on what grounds other religions will be brought up before the bar.  Most of the offenses appear to be financial , and what group activities there were in the secular, business, world.  But we’ve all seen government use a case like this as a foothold.  I am, therefore, reluctantly skeptical of what on the face of it seems a  logical and prudent move on the part of the French government.
  • BARNUM AND PELOSI: It seems that Nancy Pelosi has figured out that the so called “government option ” which, in fact, is not an “option” at all, but is in fact a forced government takeover of our Health care system, is it going over all that well with the voters .
    pelosi4

    Nancy Pelosi

It’s not even going over all that well with the Democrats in Congress, truth to tell.  It seems, that someone let leak the meaning of “public corruption”.  But Nancy needs this to go through.  The fact is, she needs government to HAVE that power.  So what does she do?   Well, when something is totally unpalatable, you simply change the name.  Again. This time , the euphemism that Nancy would prefer to apply is “The Consumer Option” . The object of the name being that it’s tries to spread the idea that it’s the best option for consumers.

The Democrats have been trying this nonsense for some time, now. Buzz words, focus groups, etc. But the people are not buying it anymore.

There’s an old story about PT Barnum (1810 – 1891), that you may have heard of.  One of his shows was wildly successful.  So much so that crowds were becoming a serious danger.  People were so packed in Barnum was afraid that folks were going to get trampled.

    Phineas Taylor Barnum

    Phineas Taylor Barnum

So he responded by having his people open up some of the gates shouting “This Way to the Great Egress!!” Now, of course, most people don’t know just what an “Egress” is. Thinking that it was some kind of wonderful, strange, or beautiful animal that Barnum made his name on,  the crowds started moving in that direction.  Egress means ‘Exit”.  Barnum made it sound attractive by his choice of wording, because nobody knew what the word meant.  Barnum you may recall, also was quoted as saying “There’s a sucker born every minute”. This apparently is the rule that Nancy Pelosi lives by these days.  One can only hope that she is not far from the “Great Egress”, and work toward that goal.

  • PEOPLE DRAIN: Billy Beck makes a great point today, and one I’ve been on the verge of making the last week or so, as I watch the numbers trickling on on jobs here in the land of Taxes, otherwise known as New York State:

“The Empire State is being drained of an invaluable resource — people.”

.(Empire Center for New York State Policy, quoted in The New York Post)

Try to understand this elementary principle of collectivist politics: you are not yours.  Your life does not belong to you. You are a “resource” to be employed at the discretion of others, and if you don’t think so, then your only alternative is to uproot your life, leave your home and become a refugee in search of freedom. This is precisely the condition of those Europeans who abandoned their homes when America was once the only light of freedom in the world.

I tend to agree, Billy.  I’ve watched it going on for twenty years, both here and in California , and I’m here to tell you that it’s nothing short of heartbreaking.  The businesses are the ones to leave first as the tax and regulatory burden gets to be too much .  What’s left behind at that point is people scrambling to find work.

I live near Rochester, New York.  Our big industries 30 years ago were Xerox, Bausch and Lomb and Kodak.  All three of these are a mere shell of their former selves.  The reason?  To some degree this is due to technology changing…. But to the largest of degrees, it is also due to taxes and regulatory structures that make it impossible to maintain any sizable business in the area.  As it stands right now, the largest employer in our neighborhood is the University of Rochester medical center.  A government entity.  Ponder that for a moment. Ponder the impact of that on the lives of people who have lived and worked in around this area for generations.  All of that happening because they couldn’t control the rise of government, and couldn’t see that by demanding more and more of government they were killing off their own lives , their own livelihood.

And so it is; The lack of work has people reluctantly leaving.  The question is, as Billy points out, where can they go? Moving to another state, another part of the country, instead amount is standing on a chair to get yourself out of the flood water for a few minutes, knowing full well that the water is eventually going to rise enough to make the chair uninhabitable as well.

  • BITSBLOG BUMPERSTICKER OF THE DAY: comes to us by way of Shona Darress, from Ben Sley at Facebook. Now, yes, I know it’s not strictly speaking a bumper sticker…. but the laugh will be the excuse for the excess:

As a business owner, tax payer and elected official, I freely admit that I am VERY skeptical when the government warns me about anything. Government typically causes more problems than they solve, and it’s in their own best interests (power, taxes, etc) to have a crisis du jour and keep people alarmed and afraid. Fearful people are much more malleable.

Case in point, Globull Warming / Climate Change is the biggest scam of all time and is nothing more than a thinly veiled guise to prey on the fears of the ignorant to raise our taxes and erode our freedom and sovereignty! But don’t take my word for it, I urge you to see for yourself below. Then share this information widely!

Also, I will continue to post relevant articles here as I find them, so share this blog and check back occasionally. Finally, I welcome any relevant information you can send me to share here!

Performance ReportNine months ago, Congress passed and President Obama signed an economic stimulus package totalling $1.8 trillion.  Hastily designed and implemented, the legislation was highly criticized because it was virtually impossible for anyone to have actually read the bill (much less understand it) prior to implementation.  The President himself told us that it was imperative we pass these bills in order to restore economic stability.  Conservatives, especially fiscal conservatives, howled, claiming the bill was inappropriately designed, that the money being spent could not possibly generate economic growth because it would take too long to move through the system, with the added concern of driving up an already astronomical deficit.  The Administration insisted that the spending was necessary to keep unemployment from exceeding 10%.  We were being deceived, and we knew it.

It generally takes about six months for changes in fiscal or monetary policy to be felt throughout the broader economy, so after nine months we should be seeing some signs of economic improvement.  That is, the weekly economic statistics should be trending upward.  Granted, corporate earnings have been stable in the third quarter.  But other than those areas specifically stimulated by the targeted efforts of Congress and the Administration (auto sales via “cash for clunkers” and the $8,000 first-time home buyers tax rebate), the broader economy continues to struggle.

Economic statistics released last week, the week of October 19, indicated the following:

  • a 1.2% decline in building permits, the pre-curser to home construction
  • a 0.5% increase in housing starts, which is favorable, except that we’re talking about historically low levels to begin with
  • a decline in the producer price index, suggesting that there is insufficient demand for raw materials to drive prices up
  • an increase in crude oil inventories, again suggesting slack demand
  • initial jobless claims up 1.7%, remaining stubbornly high at 531,000.  This means that employers continue to lay people off at a rapid clip.
  • leading economic indicators were up 1.0%, mainly due to an increase in stock prices (this is a good thing)
  • existing home sales were up 9.4%, but keep in mind this is due to the afore-mentioned $8,000 tax credit.

In short, economic growth continues to lag, and without something more substantial, such as reductions in personal income tax rates, will remain weak until we create systemic aggregate demand.  And given where our national budget deficit is, tax cuts are not likely to happen under this administration.  Instead, President Obama is considering how to raise taxes, which will have the effect of discouraging growth further.

Stay tuned, as we continue to monitor our progress.

Over at Reason this morning,  Peter Suderman suggests something(Link repaired….Editor) … that I”ve been slowly coming around to, myself. He looks at the on again / off again agreement between the White House and the Democrats in Congress, on what is or is not supportable in a government run ‘option’. (We both know in the end, the thing will end up being a requirement, but let’s go with the mislabeling for now)

Peter Suderman

Peter Suderman

Yes, Obama has consistently had good things to say about the inclusion of the public option (though he’s never demanded it be included). But lately, he’s waffled about which particular flavor of public option he favors. According to Ezra Klein, that’s proven irksome for Senate Democrats trying to figure out what, exactly, the administration supports.

I’m also hearing a lot of irritation from congressional Democrats at the mixed signals being sent by the White House.  If the White House wants to advocate for the trigger, fine. If the White House wants to advocate for the public option, fine.  But for the White House to host one meeting where they signal that they’re uncomfortable with Reid’s decision to push the envelope on the public option and then make a big effort to walk that meeting back after the left gets angry is confusing everybody.

…Since the administration is considered the most important actor here, no one knows quite how to structure their strategy so long as the White House refuses to fully show its cards.

The problem with this notion, it seems to me, is that it assumes the White House supports a very particular policy.  But as I’ve pointed out before, what Obama really supports is the passage of a bill—any bill, just so long as it can more or less legitimately be called “health-care reform.” Now, it’s obviously impossible to know for certain what the White House’s thinking is. But my guess is that what he supports isn’t so much one version of the public plan or another, but instead, whatever flavor of the public plan is most likely to result in successful passage—and thus, political victory.

I think that’s correct.

First of all, it’s well within the fantasy of the left to think that Obama, the Chosen One, supports whatever fantasy is brewing in the minds of his individual supporters, even if the individual supporters come to exactly opposite conclusions about what it is Obama suppsoedly supports. It’s easy enough to do… Obama has given his followers few in the way of specifics on what he does or does not support, and when he does, he is likely as not to reverse that support as maintaining his own political power demands. Such is the nature of political coalitions, anymore. Obama understands this, as few on the political scene do , these days.  It’s why the campaign that he ran was such an overwhelming success.  It’s also why his campaign which was so successful, gave us nothing but generalities, which do not even remotely resemble the policies he has put in place so far as president.  Obama seems to me to be doing his best to avoid dashing those illusions with anything resembling reality.

Secondly,  this is a trick we saw Bill Clinton do so many times… The whole of the Clinton Presidency was a pollsters bread and butter, the whole of which was done with one finger up watching for changes in the political wind.  It wasn’t until something came up that he  (And his advisers) felt he could support without damaging himself too badly, that he actually came out swinging. By that time, public opinion was already turning on him, and he had to get in front  of the political lynch mob, and act like the whole thing was a parade he’d arranged and was leading. Such is exactly what I see Obama doing now. As with all coalitions,  he is trying to placate both ends of the coalition, by giving everyone mostly platitudes, and as few specifics as possible.

Thing is,  far from being a trick that is limited to the government takeover of health care, Mr. Obama has been doing this  with nearly everything. Consider the Afghan situation, and the Obama non-response to it.  The real problem with that situation, is that while Mr. Obama is waiting for a political solution to rise to the top of the glass, he also ends up being perceived internationally, as a weak leader.  Already, our Allies in Afghanistan are strongly coming out in favor of General McChystal’s plan to bring more troops into the region, while we sit around and wait for President Obama’s finger gauge to bring him to a solution.  The image being given is that of the classic ‘Deer in the headlights” as opposed to a strong decisive leader.

The result is, intentionally, a reduction of influence in the world of these United States, at least, as the result of a weak international “leader”, and a disgruntled and worried electorate. The only positive thing that will come from this state of affairs, is the elections in 2010 and 2012.

Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read anywhere on the ‘sphere… The BitsBlog Nightly Ramble

  • LEFTISM AS A RELIGION: Anyone who doubts and the leftist religion is a powerful one should draw comparisons between the reaction to word of President Obama being willing to settle for a less invasive “public option” , and the Afghan protests yesterday over the mere reports of a burnt Koran. The rule appears to be that it  doesn’t need to be true to completely unhinge the adherents of the religion involved. In the end, however, what this is is Leftist Democrats demonstrating once again their unique inability to herd their own, over the cliff.  The democrats in both houses of Congress are many things, but they’re not lemmings.  The ones out on the leading edge of this nonsense are beginning to see that there’s a long drop off that cliff to the water. Public support for a government takeover of healthcare continues to flatline, and they’re starting to feel voter anger. The Democrat leaders, meantime are looking at the calendar and realizing that having nothing to show for the $800 billion that they’ve taken from our economy so far for this socialist nonsense  probably doesn’t make  good election campaign slogan, either.  Amazing, the trouble you can get into with other people’s money, isn’t it?
  • LAWS DON’T APPLY TO CONGRESS:  Armstrong Williams has something to say:
If there’s anything that surprises me about any of this, it’s that people are still surprised when someone points it out.
  • 85 INDUSTRIES MORE PROFITABLE THAN HEALTH INSURANCE: That’s right. Mark Perry has the details. So are we now going to see government intrusion in their profit margins, too?  I guess maybe I shouldn’t give them any ideas, eh?
  • TAPSCOTT TO CLIENT NUMBER NINE:  PUT A SOCK IN IT A great column.

Lest anybody gets the idea that Spitzer can be considered a credible source on issues of corporate ethics, let’s review a few facts about his own misuse and abuse of the public trust. During his successful 2006 campaign for governor, Spitzer loudly announced his return of more than $124,000 in campaign contributions he had received since 2003 from lawyers with the Milberg Weiss law firm in New York. The firm and four of its senior partners had been indicted on 20 counts as a criminal enterprise by the Justice Department for paying an estimated $11.7 million in bribes to plaintiffs in at least 150 cases going back to 1981. The firm received $250 million or more in tainted legal fees from the cases.

What Spitzer didn’t say was that he kept an additional $42,555 in such contributions. Among the unreturned checks were $10,000 from senior partner Melvyn Weiss and $10,000 from senior partner David Bershad. Weiss was convicted and sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and $10 million in fines, while Bershad cut a deal with the government, got a six-month prison sentence, paid a $250,000 fine and forfeited $7.75 million. Spitzer also kept checks totaling $8,000 from Weiss senior partner Steven Schulman, who was convicted and served a six-month federal prison term.

Seems complaining about the ethics of companies you’re trying to demonize can backfire on you of someone has your history down.

  • SO WHERE IS ALL THE “STIMULUS MONEY GOING? Apparently, to companies under criminal investigation. Hope and change.
  • SPEAKING OF MONEY GOING TO PEOPLE UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION, shall we speak of Charlie Rangel? Course he’s not getting quite so much as he once did.
  • CHRIS DODD, TOO: You knew this stuff would eventually happen. Simply a matter of the crime and the usual defense of it catching up with them. And time, of course. Not that they’re not still trying to cover their asses. (BBCT:Glenn)
  • THE TREND: Am I alone in noting the pattern developing here among leading Democrats? I mean, look at the last several points. Salena Zito at RCP says apparently not:
    Selina Zito

    Selina Zito

A poll of opinion polls shows Americans’ attitudes are changing rapidly. They are less and less thrilled about the country’s direction and Congress, according to Tom Bevan, executive editor of national polling aggregator RealClearPolitics. He says independent voters are shifting away from the polices of the Obama administration and Democrats.

“Independents have flipped negative,” warns Bevan. “That’s not a good thing for any party.”

And this is after less than a year. Imagine what the trend will be after four years.

  • MEANWHILE THE PRESIDENT PLAYS GOLF: Remember when George W Bush gave up golf because his critics thought he should be staying in the white House directing the response to the crisis?  I guess that doesn’t apply to the Chosen One.  He’s played as much golf in the last nine months as Bush played in nearly three years. And where’s the outcry now? Oh, wait… his caddy is holding up the sign for silence. I guess we shouldn’t say anything.
