Now imagine if you will that the races had been reversed, to wit a field trips for white students only.   The Reverend Al Sharpton would have pulled out Arizona to lead the protest parade,  Jessie Jackson would denounced school trips for hymies and Dim Won would called the school board misguided.

• IMMIGRATION CONTINUED: In response to some of the (utterly nonsensical)  feedback I got on the immigration item in yesterday’s RAMBLE , I point to David Harsanyi who says in part:

  There’s a lot to this quip. It seems to me those screaming the loudest about it happening in the church while ignoring what goes on in that area outside the church are attacking not sex abuse, but the church. How many complaining about the church are also complaining about the far wider impact sex abuse by UN relief workers, for example? How many even know of it?

Did Eric Holder’s Justice Department lawyers just take Faisal Shahzad at word thst he no terrorist ties before they read him his Miranda rights?  Evidently.    Shahzad sound like combatant to me, weapon of mass destruction and enemy training.  What does Shahzad sound like to you?

Reuters quotes the source as saying the suspect has admitting buying the truck, putting the devices together into the vehicle and leaving it at the scene.

“He’s claimed to have acted alone,” the source says, according to Reuters.

Earlier, a Taliban group in Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attempting bombing.

Time quotes a Pakistani government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, as saying that the suspect had ties with militants while in Pakistan. “He was here at a training camp,” the source said, according to the magazine. The source also claimed that members of Shahzad’s family were arrested in Karachi on Tuesday morning.

So why is Shahzad still in civilian custody?

• IS AL GIVING UP ON GLOBAL WARMING? Roger Simon seems to think so.
• BYE BYE CHARLIE! I see Charlie Crist is finally decided to hang up on the Republican party.  That’s OK, given the Republican Party hung up on Charlie Crist quite a while ago.  Don’t let the door hit ya  on the way out, Charlie… Does anyone think that the swing to the right of the Republican party is not happening?  Does anyone think that the rank and file is not being heard?  Look very closely at what’s been happening in this race and you’ll change your mind.
• YOU’VE MADE ENOUGH MONEY: I often get letters complaining about my calling Obama a socialist at heart.  How do you counter this, then?  Mark Levin:
  It’s true; every time this guy goes off the teleprompter , he gets some self into trouble by revealing his true heart and soul.  That’s why he’s got four of the bloody things, I guess. Can we just call the guys socialist now, and move on from there?  UC, personally, I wonder if we could depend on Mr. Obama to tell Oprah Winfrey she’s made enough money?  Wasn’t she the one who made something like $100,000,000.00 on her latest venture?   Or might we depend on him to tell George Soros that he’s made enough money?  Somehow, I rather doubt it.  I also wonder if he considers that the Goldman Sachs employees who donated something on the order of a million dollars to his campaign last cycle had earned enough money?  Or maybe, they get an exemption because their donations went to the “greater good”?  Go ahead.  Tell me about how the line of “enough money” isn’t drawn based on politics.  In that environment, “rich” is defined as anyone making dime one more than me.
• AZ IMMIGRATION LAW: I’ve been watching for some time the business with the Arizona immigration law, I think it’s the best thing they could possibly have done.  What it does, is basically reinforce that to be the beneficiary of our constitutional rights, one must needs be a citizen of this country.  (Or, one supposes, to be President, but I digress.)   Sorry, that’s simply the way it is, and in my view the way it should be.  That said, Byron York over at the Washington Examiner looks over the field of play on this one, and comes up with a list of the ten dumbest things said about the law.
• POLITICAL CORRECTNESS: I’ve been saying for several weeks now, indeed, several years that the act of political correctness is the sign of a dying culture.  So it’s interesting to note similar notices coming from Bruce McQuain and Richard Fernandez.

Obama dithered while the Gulf burned, a time line from Doug Ross:

Perhaps if the oil breached the Louisiana levees, then caught on fire, and then turned New Orleans into a Dresden-like inferno, the President would stop campaigning for a couple of days and actually pay attention to his own, personal Katrina.  Even The New York Times has noticed, decrying the President’s lackadaisical response.  But I’m guessing that somehow, someway, it’s all President Bush’s fault.

But the White House response has consisted of dispatching lawyers to New Orleans and shutting down other rigs that have nothing to do with the BP disaster.  On April 30th — ten days after the catastrophic explosion — the oil and gas news site RigZone reported that the White House had forbidden new drilling.

Note the Obami’s first response was not to contain the spill or to implement the existing contingency plan.  Rather the Obami’s first move was to shut down the oil industry in the entire Gulf.

The differentiation Kaus is missing is the difference between private and public sector unionsl.  I do not dispute the overall benefit of private sector unions.  I dispute any more need for public sector unions at all.   Kaus is at least on the right tracks, which not bad for a ‘rat.

That sounds like an important “women’s health” story, right? Yet, the ASA’s warning has gone virtually unreported, so far.

• IT’S THE BOMB, BRO: The big news of last evening, of course, was the incendiary device on four wheels parked in the middle of New York’s Times Square. The news stations certainly covered it well enough, but there hasn’t been any response has the New York governor’s office about it that been worthwhile, as of this writing.  I can’t help but wonder if the reason is that they can’t figure out how to spin it to their advantage.
• SHOULD WE CALL HIM “SLICK BARRY”? The President today was to have headed for  the gulf coast. Frankly, there’s only one reason that I can think of that he would go there.  It is partially described in the statement from the White House which describe the trip is having “a very small footprint “. Make no mistake, here.  We Americans are being manipulated the once again when it comes to energy.   For the last couple of weeks now, we have heard noises from the far left as regards the explosion and sinking of an oil rig in the gulf, and the supposedly ever expanding damage being done by the resulting oil spill.  It is no accident in my view that this occurrence should come into the news so very quickly after the White House made and over gesture , and frankly an empty one, in saying that we should expand our offshore oil exploration.  Does anyone reading this not understand the timing involved here?  Obama can scream all he wants about how we’re going to increase our oil production from offshore drilling, but his own people call in a liar.  David Axelrod for example who spoke on Good Morning America on Friday last, saying that there would be no expansion of offshore drilling until such time as a thorough investigation of what happened in the gulf…. blah, blah, blah.    I’m actually writing this fairly early on Monday morning, so I have no idea what the president’s going to say once he gets there.  Not precisely, anyway.  Maybe he’s going down there to do a Moses and part the oil slick with a wave of his magic staff.  But whatever… I will guarantee you that we will see some kind of feint at a policy change, that will keep his Enviro-whackjob base happy, while not pissing off the majority of Americans who are already paying too much for energy any further . You want a real indication of where the president stands on energy?  Think about it now; Does anybody remember when president Bush was in office in oil prices were going up?  There was all kinds of blame heaped on the White House from the left, and from the press (but I repeat myself ) for that price rise.  Have you seen the price at the pump lately?  Where’s the outrage in the press now? Heck, have they even mentioned the price increases?
• EMERGENCY RESPONSE: I remember, not so very long ago, back when President Bush was in the White House As regards the lack of emergency preparedness vis’ a vie’  Katrina.  The current situation and the press is reaction to it is remarkably different.  We have two blatant instances of a lack of correct response for emergency situations.  One the oil spill in the gulf, and the other more recent affair , the mobile bomb in Times Square.  The administration has managed to show itself as totally incompetent to the task of emergency response.  Wasn’t that exactly the situation Candidate Obama promised we wouldn’t see in his administration?  Is this Obama’s Katrina?
• GOLDMAN, ET AL: The evidence surrounding the Goldman Sachs affair is that there’s something more going on here than we are told.  Certainly, the shock involved in that investment bankers want to make money, is something of a laugher.  Just as certainly, it shows the socialistic tendencies of the current occupant of the White House a and that of the majority of Congress at this point.  Some of their behavior seems to point in the direction of manipulation, as well. And let’s please consider the points brought up by the lovely and forever talented Michelle Malken, on the matter. In part:
  

  • While irony-challenged Democratic candidates such as mob-linked banker Alexi Giannoulias in Illinois (who hopes to fill Obama’s old Senate seat) call on Republicans to return their fat-cat Goldman Sachs donations, the Democrats are silent on the $994,795 in Goldman Sachs campaign cash that Obama bagged. The class-warfare Dems are also mum on all the president’s Goldman Sachs men sitting in the catbird seat:</li><li>Goldman Sachs partner Gary Gensler is Obama’s Commodity Futures Trading Commission head. He was confirmed despite heated congressional grilling over his role, as Reuters described it, “as a high-level Treasury official in a 2000 law that exempted the $58 trillion credit default swap market from oversight. The financial instruments have been blamed for amplifying global financial turmoil.” Gensler said he was sorry — hey, it worked for tax cheat Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner — and was quickly installed to guard the henhouse.
  • Goldman Sachs kept White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel on a $3,000 monthly retainer while he worked as Clinton’s chief fundraiser, as first reported by Washington Examiner columnist Tim Carney. The financial titans threw in another $50,000 to become the Clinton primary campaign’s top funder. Emanuel received nearly $80,000 in cash from Goldman Sachs during his four terms in Congress — investments that have reaped untold rewards, as Emanuel assumed a leading role championing the trillion-dollar TARP banking-bailout law.

  The fact of the matter is The Democrats are using Goldman Sachs as a scapegoat for the economic failure caused by trying to secure home loans for people that couldn’t afford them, who happened to be the smack dab in the middle of the Democrat voter core. Goldman Sachs, for their part, seem to be allowing themselves to be led to the “slaughter”.  Whether this is willingly or unwillingly I don’t know. but you know something less than honest is going on when Carl Levin is the ringmaster at the congressional circus hearings. Limbaugh has a thought worth considering here as well:

  So is Bam throwing Goldman under the bus here?  I don’t know.  We’ll have to wait and find out.  But, you know, Blankfein went up there, bent over, grabbed the ankles, said whatever you want, we’ll pay the fine, we agree with your financial regulatory reform, got out of there thinking, “Ah, dodged a bullet here,” and the next day, criminal investigation is announced into Goldman Sachs.  It’s like I said, what’s going to happen here at the end of the day, a huge fine, some of these execs will leave by design, form their own hedge funds and earn 25 or $30 billion a year.  Some might end up in the administration, you never know.  All of this to create the image that it is Wall Street and the rich — like I said yesterday, Obama is dividing this country two ways.  Dividing it on class envy, the haves and have-nots, and dividing it on race.  Hitler only did one way, the Soviet communists only did one way, Obama is combining these two techniques, and you see it right before your very eyes.

  As I said.. we’re being manipulated, here. And as I’ve said in the past, there are no constitutional guarantees with a socialist /populist government running the show.

• IT AIN’T PRETTY BUT IT WORKS: Glenn Reynolds thinks the Tea Party movement likely to have unglamorous but effective future.
  I think he’s right.

I’ve been feeling like I should say something about the failed terrorist attack this weekend in New York but can’t come up with much beyond the observation that I don’t quite get why this is prompting so much less freaking-out than the Christmas underpants bomber did. Both seem on a par to me — amateurish failures that seem to indicate that whichever people might be inclined to kill American civilians don’t have much in the way of capacity. Is the country learning? Maturing? Or is it just that airplane-related incidents have some special grasp on the public imagination?

Qari Hussain Mehsud, the top bomb maker for the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, said he takes “fully responsibility for the recent attack in the USA.” Qari Hussain made the claim on an audiotape accompanied by images that was released on a YouTube website that calls itself the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan News Channel.

I will agree with Chuckles, b/k/a Charles Schumer, that New York City remains the primary domestic target for terrorist attack.  Residents of Baghdad and Jerusalem may wish to disagree with the specifics of Chuckles characterization.

It is true: 33 years ago I pleaded guilty, and I served time at the prison for common law crimes at Chino, not in a VIP prison.  That period was to have covered the totality of my sentence.  By the time I left prison, the judge had changed his mind and claimed that the time served at Chino did not fulfil the entire sentence, and it is this reversal that justified my leaving the United States

Money may allow Polanski to flee and thwart justice.  It does not buy him any respect.

Dale McAlpine was charged with causing “harassment, alarm or distress” after a homosexual police community support officer (PCSO) overheard him reciting a number of “sins” referred to in the Bible, including blasphemy, drunkenness and same sex relationships.

The 42-year-old Baptist, who has preached Christianity in Wokington, Cumbria for years, said he did not mention homosexuality while delivering a sermon from the top of a stepladder, but admitted telling a passing shopper that he believed it went against the word of God.

A Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy was shot in the stomach Friday by an undocumented immigrant off Interstate 8, according sheriff’s officials.

Lt. Tami Villar told 12 News that the search and rescue deputy was investigating a load of marijuana in the desert and was confronted by five suspects. She also said the wounded deputy is expected to survive.

Deputies believe at least two people were armed with long guns and at least one handgun. The deputy, whose name was not released, was patrolling alone in what is considered a high-traffic drug and human-smuggling corridor.

Let me see, it is a police state to ask illegal immigrants for their green cards.   It is unconstitutional to require voters to produce a picture identification, but Dicky Durbin thinks I should to produce a biometric ID for the privilege of breathing his air.  Uuckyoufay, Dicky!

National Journal’s loss, Bitsblog gain? from Peter Wehner, Commentary:

National Journal has let go three of its prized columnists: Jonathan Rauch, Stuart Taylor, and Clive Crook. That’s a big loss for National Journal.  While I often don’t agree with their point of view, all three are intelligent and thoughtful writers. Rauch and Taylor in particular are people whom I read closely and take seriously.

Would be nice catch, but alas a just a wee bit above our pay scale.
